my preamp source

I've got a little fender frontman reverb amp that I use for a practice amp, and I am using it as a preamp source to go into my sblive. I'm using the headphone jack as the output. Of course, there is a hum. Is that avoidable at all? Does cakewalk have some sort of filter for that, or is there some cheap solution to this?

Careful with that axe, Eugene.
I've read a few posts about folks frying their cards trying this trick. The headphone outs are a higher power source than line outs because they're designed to drive speakers.
And as you stated, even if it does work the results will be noisy. I believe the answer is a transformer box that will allow you to convert very loud signals to line level for input to the SBLive. But I've never tried it. A real pre-amp is far quieter.

So far I've figured, if it's not loud enough to fry my ears (in headphones), I probably wouldn't fry my soundcard.

I've read posts about a POD. I checked out line6's web site, and they didn't have any prices.

How much would the basic Pod cost roughly?

Check out www.musiciansfriend.com or www.zzounds.com/a--2676837. I think it lists for like $450-500, and goes for $350-400 street, maybe less? Note that they just came out with a version 2.0.

A POD should be three bills at your store. If they won't comply with this bid, then throw an epileptic fit or do a slip and fall..
BTW for a little bit more there are several preamps that come into focus that might be a lot cleaner than the POD ever will be, but if you're doing guitar, then I flat out say:
Get the POD. It gets even more fun with MIDI control from the included Sound Diver S/W.
BTW: try this experiment:
Plug your line level output into your speakers or headphones and tell me how loud it is. I rest my case.
