my latest project... speaker stands

so ive made a plethora of all sorts of cables and learned to solder like a crazy spastic. and ive showed you what me and my brothers do in the summer(not quite music related), and now this is my new plan. my 20/20bas are to akward on my desk area, and hard to position. so ive decided to made two stands out of wood. This was my original idea.

then i realised that most likely it will be really hard to make a central pillar flat enough to be super stable. so i came up with this idea.

this is what i would use as a column instead, i remembered how strong triangles were, so im making an X-like shape with a main piece parrallel to one side and perpendicular to the other. the i will use two same length pieces of wood, only half the widthat 45 degree angles to the other wider piece. With the base from before.

However new developements from my brother's engineering head is that its gotta probblay have a thicker base (which i dont like because it will look ugly. but then i will be able to put balasts in the bas and remove them if we want to reposition. of course each speaker is 30Lbs, need to have somethign of equal weight at the opposite side.

Ill keep you posted on that developement and how sturdy/purdy they turn out.

kristian - have you considered flush mounting (soffit mount) the 20/20s. While we were waiting for the genelecs to arrive I had to try something so I put the 20/20s in the hole. Mate they sounded fantastic..Amirel who had worked on them for 2 years couldn't believe they were the same speaker.....it's not hard to build and well worth it I reckon.

cheers

John, what's all involved in soffit-mounting monitors? Just cut a hole in the wall and stick them in there? I gotta believe it's more complicated than that. Good idea, though ... I always thought the 20/20s were a little too big to be sitting on the meter bridge, I have them on stands a little further back now ... but am intrigued by the idea of of mounting them like far-fields ... in my next new state-of-the art studio, of course! ;)

Kristian, I bought some great ~48" stands for around $70usd a while ago, I understand the do-it-yourself attitude ... but I think I can find the link to where I got them if you want it ... your design looks good, though. Also, the little blue spikeys will help isolate the stand from the floor ... I also use that blue-tack stuff to set the speakers on to further help isolate them from the stand ... and to avoid having them fall off!

if soffit mounting requires any cutting into walls i dont think i can do it :)

Im thinking i can maybe do the pair of these for $80, and have a bit of fun while in the making. If anything the work to make them will keep me off the computer, and that is a good thing. however, i would like the link just to have a look at how someone else makes theirs.
