My computer stuff:

Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo laptop 2.66 Ghz
Evolution 2 octave USB keyboard
NO SOFTWARE yet
No soundcard :(

I only want program drums, bass and synth with software synths and record guitars and vocal tracks. I am guitarist and just want to lay out some ideas, not to build a recording studio all at once.

I am trying to get some software from our band's synth playing dude for free.

Which software should I get ?

I have no money to spend on this, I just need software first to get started and buy expensive stuff later. Soundcard and latency is not a big deal then at the moment.

When you say "no soundcard," you mean "the ordinary soundcard or on-board sound chip," right?

for free check out the free HOTSTEPPER on the net.
it will let you sequence all sorts of drum/base/synth samples and tune them up and down (very flexible) - then export the sequenced mix to a stereo wave file which you can then import into a multitrack sequencer.
free multitrack software is audacity and kristal - but for low cost (29 bucks)
with thousands of features check out powertracks at pgmusic.com.
a new version nine was just released with loads of new features.
if you think i'm lying go talk to the nice folks on the forum there.
also magix just released music studio 2005(net price i checked yesterday 70 bucks). this is a killer app for the money
imho. does everything anyone would want to do a song. i have the previous version. just go to magix and check it out (too many features to list)
or harmonycentral.com have a write up.
if you want a cheap good editor check out goldwave.com.
hitsquad.com has scads of demoes you can try.
really for less than 100 bucks i got magix plus powertracks and between both apps plus having hotstepper i can do anything i would ever want to do in a song.

Yep. There's a basic one.

NOW: I got Sonar from my band's keyboard player. Is that good for me?

yeah sure. sonar is good enough for many things, though I only use it for audio...

Fernando
