I am new to this. Ended (or started) with tascam 1082 board firwired to Tower with Sonar Producer edition. My computer still has original N Vidia N Force sound card. I do have some latency problems but lowered buffer in Sonar to 11.6 (which I am told makes computer work harder) For some reason I thought the Tascam board kind of became the sound card because that is where I set my I/O settings in Sonar. But not sure really. Is that true or should I invest in soundcard created for recording. Saw low priced one at Newegg for about $150 (Creative X-Fi ) which reads well, or is that just a waste of money untill I can afford a better one, or keep what I have? Reading the forums its hard to figure which to buy. Thanks for any input. Albert

The Tascam product is acting as your soundcard. It's just attached via firewire instead of PCI. A PCI soundcard would be superfluous.

thanks for that. I was just reading up on the pci soundcards and figured that. So my Tascam overides the soundcard I have in computer when i record? But even at low buffer settings I still have latency when I use for example Roland V drums with BFD soft synth. What I do now is record with soft synth and add later. But I believe I shouldn't have to. Any ideas. Thanks

oop. missed that part.. Everything should go through that, you dont need anything else. Which one is it?

The tascam 1082. Now I see they have the 1882 or something like that. Pretty good board. But still wondering why I still have to lower buffer for latency when using soft synths. I thought a good board would handle that. I lowered it in Sonar and Tascam and still get drum delays with Roland V drum kit triggering BFD drum sounds. Doesn't sound possible, does it? Computer has 1 gig ram and lots of C drive space...

Not at all. Softsynth latency is a function of hardware, Driver but mostly computer

You probably need to do some testing to see where the problem is.

try a different softsynth and see if you still get the bad latency
