thinner, cheaper speakers seem to sound better to me. I use a 10" speaker that i bought at a thrift shop. it seems like bass and pa speakers are too muddy. i tried an 18" pa speaker and it sucked. i've been told about friends using 10 inch bass speakers, but those also sucked, but maybe ur ssounds good because it's so small.
you might try putting another head on the tom and put the speaker at the otherside of the tom......... i (along with a lot of other people) have done that and it sounds real cool.
i did pretty much the same thing as you about a year ago, but i flipped it completely around........i put a single headed floor tom about 1 foot from the b-drum with the head facing the drum and the speaker facing the drum from the other end.........the same basic idea as using a 2 headed tom, but not quite as much resonance.
tried it on bass guitar........for rap it might be good........but for everything else you don't need that amount of low end. it will just get in the way of the bass drum.
