Hey, I recorded these guys on a pretty basic setup. Mackie vlz 1202 into a soundblaster live into n-tracks. I know the guitar slows down at the beginning... my bad (forgot to have the drummer click the intro) but they weren't worried enough to fix it. Sblive has been upgraded to an omni i/o and n-tracks is now sonar 4. I thought it came out decent for what I was working with. Any comments or suggestions? I'll be recording one of these guys new band in a couple weeks, and I want to make sure it sounds as good as possible.

Hard to tell, because the music is pure noise, oh, there's some music, in between the excessive snare =P. It's all right, but the intro and musically inappropriate fast parts don't do much for me musically.

What kind of mics and such are you using? For what it is, it's decent, but to be a better recording it could use quite a bit more clarity to some things. Needs quite a bit more kick drum, I dont really hear it at all, and in core-y music it really needs a lot of it to really shove the beat into the chest like a steak (yes, a steak.... yes, a slice of cooked meat) through the heart! YEAH!

Anyway, I'd probably classify them more as hardcore than metal.

Heh, yeah I made no promises about the quality of the band itself :) I think it lost quite a bit of clarity in the streaming format. But I think you're very right about the drums. I'm still working on developing a good ear for this kind of thing. The weak kick is a good point. Hopefully mixing each mic onto a separate track with the omni will help. I was using 3 sm57s and a beta 52 on the kit, 57s on cabs, and an mxl 990 on vox. New setup will include the omni, sp c1, and two 990's for drum overheads.

And yeah, I wouldn't call them metal either. Hardcore for sure.

thanks for the input. I'll post the new band ("The Helm") when I get that done so we can compare and contrast :)
