I'm fairly new to home recording. I recorded this last week with my FP10, due to microphone limitations the drums were recorded with all dynamic mics. I also am mixing through computer speakers that are probaly terrible. The tune is for a "Melodic Hardcore" band. Tell me what this mix needs.

Stream it at:

If that link doesn't work I'll upload it to megaupload.

sounds pretty dry ...i saw the photo of you guys jamming away...so its all real instruments i assume...but it doesnt sound that way...sounds very computer based ....but maybe thats what people like these days???

one totally shallow throw away comment ...barry manilow completely killed the market for anyone having the phrase "bermuda triangle" in a song or title of a song whatsoever.....it will probably take 50 years for that memory to fade.;)

Everything is really jumbled in there-it all seems to be centered-it definitely needs some panning because nothing stands out.
The kick drum is the loudest thing in there but its more of a click sound than bass drum.

yep, those are all real instruments. The kick and snare are both triggered I guess that might be what is giving it a computer based sound?

I've got the guitars and drum overheads panned hard left and hard right. The Bass, Kick, and snare are panned center. Should I try panning the overheads and guitars differently?

the question is do you want clicks for bass drums......if not then i think you need to rethink the whole mix because its all a bit like that.

regardless of what you have shown so far ...in your mind what is it that you want to sound like ....and then try to get to that point..

so what is it?

I do want the kick to sound clicky and stand out in the mix, but I don't want it to be too overwhelming, theres actually two kick tracks in the mix. One is a triggered sample which provides a good amount of the click, and the other is the recorded kick with compression and eq'd to emphasize the highs. Should I water it down a little and change the eq on the recorded track or turn down the "click" track?

i think you may be overdoing it...when i was listening to it i thought....wow clicky bass drum ...and that sort of dominated my thought from there on....and it sounded like you guys are hell bent on producing something that is so far from what i could really enjoy ....but isnt that what every new band wants to do ...piss off the older generation:)

heh, Kick drum aside does everything else sound acceptable?

Geeze zazz can you be any more negative?

Anyway, this is my take on it all....and it's just my take/preferences....
- I think you have the playing down pat, very tight
- the bass drum is pretty computer-y sounding. I'm thinking less click/samples and/or less volume on the kick
- why the big gap in the middle before the drum solo? Is that so we can hear the drums solo to analyze - good idea actually...
- guitars are fine tone wise
- I would prefer a little less panning on the guitars so they sound more together. The panning does make them easy to separate though when I go to learn the song (lol j/k I could never play that fast)
- the bass is very low definition but it does hold down the bottom end nicely....

:D:):D:)

Thanks for the input!!
The drum solo at the end was actually just to test the drums mics and wasn't intended to be part of the song, haha I just forgot to take them out. I'm gonna try panning the guitars about 70 right/left instead of hard right/left.
