here's what i have set up and running...just wondering if I need anything more or less...mostly vocals and acoustic guitar recordings...Lookin go get a Sonar 7 software for the recording...what do you guys think? what sofware with good plug-ins would be great for my set-up?

Sony VAIO
Model: FZ460e
Microprocessor:2.1Ghz Intel Centrino Core 2 duo T8100 Processor
Operating System:Windows® Vista Home Premium
Hard Drive:250GB (5400 RPM) SERIAL-ATA Dsk
Memory: 2048B DDR2 667Mhz SDRAM Memory
Expresscard: 2 port firewire400, 1 port 2.0 usb

M-audio BX-5 monitors
Mackie Onyx 1220 with firewire interface
Rode nt1-a condenser mic

You will be fine.

If you try and record over 6 or 8 tracks at once you may hit some bottlenecks (probably because of 5400rpm drive, vista...).
But:
*Your processor is great.
*2gigs RAM would be fine for XP. Since you have vista, to make the most of that 2gigs of RAM, BE SURE you turn off all the unnecessary vista things that "make it look good." Just google something like "customize vista for audio recording" or "tweak vista" or something. You'll find a ton of webpages on how to strip it down.
*Hard drive speed is generally going to not be an issue, unless you do some heavy recording as I said.
*Monitors are nice (used to use them myself!).
*The Onyx 1220 is what I currently use until I move to a new house. It's awesome!

talking about something like this for the customizing vista? or is there another way without downloadin something...

no i would NOT use any programs to do it...
I'm thinking stuff like these:

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/...sed-unneeded-or-unnecessary-windows-services/
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/83ec0ffe-ee04-4d53-8b87-25d1f05c954e1033.mspx

but maybe do some more googling, those are just a few that i found my first try. Search hints: optimize for audio or video, strip down...etc.

if you have an eSATA card, I'd reccommend getting an external with an eSATA connection. If you don't have an eSATA port or card, maybe look into it. They are awesome, and the fastest.
