My KRK Rokit 8s have canons inide them

I have a question concerning my KRKs. I run the pair into a Presonus Firebox which is connected via firewire into my Macbook. Whenever I turn my monitors on and try to adjust the volume, they pop so loud that it shakes the whole room. I'm talking so loud, I'm surprised they still work. It's like the monitors are super sensitive to any volume adjustments at all. This happens for a while as I turn the volume knob (the pops get quieter) and eventually subsides, until the next time I either shut the monitors off, or disconnect the firewire.

Can someone explain why this happens? Is it like a static electricity shock or something? I'm sure it's not a grounding issue as I've transported my setup to 3 different locations and it still happens. I've resorted to leaving my monitors on at all times, but sometimes I have to disconnect the macbook and take it with me. Then I dread hooking it back up again knowing I'm going to blow my eardrums out.

Are you using the volume knob on the FireBox or on the monitors? Sounds like a really bad scratchy pot. It can be fixed, but it might be hard to access in your case.
 
my krk8's pop like mofos if I dont turn them on last...but tat doesnt sound like what youre doing wrong...Id guess it wasnt the rokits as the both have their own amp so it'd be weird if they both were faulty...so Id guess its something to do with the interface
 
Yeah, definitely a mystery. It's the volume on the interface that causes them to pop. I have the monitor volumes set to 0db, so I don't think it could be that.

Try this: turn both your monitors off and turn the interface volume knob back and forth very fast 50 times. Now turn your monitors back on and try turning the volume knob. Is the popping still there? Is it a little less loud? If so, try turning the monitors off again and then turn the knob another 50-100 times and see if you can get the popping to go away completely.
 
I had this with a digi 003.


Every morning I'd power everything on, Mute the 003, turn the volume knob about 20 times, then proceed as normal.

If I didn't do this, I'd get massive bangs, pops and crackles on turning the volume knob.

I assumed it was a dirty pot but wasn't keen on dismantling the 003 to find out.
 
Are you sure your following proper on/off sequence as KC mentioned (amps on last, off first)?

Do you have condenser microphones hooked up as well?
 
does it happen even when there is nothing hooked into the monitors? You are talking about adjusting the volume control on the KRK's right? Try doing it with nothing hooked up at all, just the monitors themselves - then at least you can isolate it. Personally I never change the volume on the monitors - set it once then control it with my interface.
 
I have no condenser mics hooked up and was following the correct sequence as far as I can remember. However, I tried guitarplayr82's method and for the first time ever, no pops, so thanks for that! I think that's how I'll be powering up from here on out. Thank all you guys for your replies!

It's good that this worked for you, but this is only a temporary solution to your problem. You have a dirty volume pot. You can read up about this online, but a permanent fix would be to open up your interface and spray some contact cleaner on the pot.

What I haven't figured out is whether the speakers have ecclesiastical laws or Japanese cameras in them. Which is it? - Oh... *cannons*. That's different...never mind-Roseanne Roseannadanna
