My headphones might be "lying"

OK folks let me explain...

I record Acoustic guitar, sometimes xy with SD, sometimes a single LD. Here is my chain: mic > pre > Korg 1200. Then I xfer the file via USB > PC .I mix and edit with Vegas using Alesis monitors.

I use the cans to set mic placement and set EQ on the KORG. Just when I think I got it right, I capture the track. I then xfer to the PC as stated above. I track dry, listen dry while tracking. I use AKG K240s

My problem is, when I mix and edit on the PC. When I playback the track for the first time, I am sometimes amazed at the lack of EQ. Sometimes the EQ is close, but more often than not, I have to boost eq across all frequencies (some very slight) in Vegas to get to a starting mixing point.

What is happening here? I cant seem to pin down the errant variable.

Thanks
Brian

My opinion, I'd never use headphones to set up things like tone or stereo image. Headphones are a loosing proposition for these kinds of things.

That's pretty much the same as just turning up the volume.

I agree with TR. Never EQ with headphones. Once you have set the mic placement with phones do a test recording and listen back through the monitors to see if you really like the sound.

Yo Bumps:

Whoever wrote the song, "Your Cheatin Heart" must have dedicated that song to cans.

Things always, or usually, sound wonderful in cans -- good environment, kind of like a minature ear-hi-fi. But, oh, boy, when you play the same cut through monitors, you wonder, "Hey, EQ, where you be?"

So, do your additives listening via monitors and use as few additives as possible.
