I think both tones are usable. The first is definitely more of a raw punk-rock tone...it's not great, but it has it's place. It's a tad digital sounding too...but if it's a Line 6, that might explain that. The second is a little more generic, but could certainly be used.
I'd say try both in whatever songs you're doing and see which one fits the best. I played guitar in a punk-ish sort of band for 3 1/2 years, and I ran a Les Paul through a '74 Fender Twin clean and used different distortion pedals depending on the song (Boss DS-1, Boss SD-1, MXR Distortion+, Danelctro Daddy-O or Big Muff).
Use whatever's best for the song.
