So I decided to take my wonderful (at least it looks it) Fostex 250 4-track cassette recorder out after a long time to play around with it, but unfortunately it makes this rather loud crackling noise. I was hoping some of you might recognize it and tell me what to do. The crackling sound is always there when the machine is on, also when there is no tape and when it's not recording or playing anything. The VU meters of track 1 and 2 actually show some input/output corresponding to the noise, also when there's nothing plugged in. I attached a sound recording. Could this be helped by demagnetizing the machine or is it a lost cause?
