Right, only my second post, so here we go...

I have recently got some home recording stuff up and running on my computer and know soon will come some actual fruits of my labour. Hence looking ahead I was wondering if anyone could help me about the internet.

What I'm looking to do is set up a website onto which I can post general bull-tish and also put up some audio stuff of my own. Further down the line I would also like to put up audio/visual (i.e. videos/music videos).

I'm currently recording straight onto my computer, have access to a digital camera from which I can download and edit film on my computer. What I was looking for is some suggestions about websites.

Can I get one for free anywhere?
If I have to pay, how much roughly?
Will I need something special to be able to play videos or music?
Any recommended sites/site providers?

As always, thanks in advance for all the help and time, and please take it easy on the new guy with stars in his eyes!

Cheers!

lol

Any time you hear the phrases:

It means that if he has to pay he is more than likely just going to say:

- Fuck it -

But for the question. Your own website that has enough bandwidth to handle music and video is going to run about $100 a year for a quality server to host, about $15+/- (unless you shop around) for domain (www.pornisbetterbusinessthanmusic.com) name registration for a year. Plus you need some one to design it. Some have "packages" available where you just fill in the blanks, but that looks like shit and I don't take those bands seriously. You gotta spend money to make money. And don't say its not just about the money, because it is. "soon will come some actual fruits of my labour" :) The fruit might be good but I ain't buying is its being sold by a hobo on the street corner.

I happen to use Powweb for my website. They give me 1 gig of storage spage, 45 gigs a month of bandwidth, an unlimited email addresses. Which are awsome because now you can email me at fuckyourmotherwithabroomstick@berntson.us

God I love the internet!

Click here is you want to visit them.

There are some cheaper ways to get around this. but it wont look like the professionals. i signed up with www.ripway.com which allows me to upload my music files etc. i got a domain name from yahoo for 9.95 and i designed the site for myself. of course, i only get one free email acct that i forward to my yahoo acct and i forward my domain name to my geocities sites so i can have how many ever pages i needed etc. and it was all done for $9.95.

but i dont know if this is the route that you want to take. you can see my site at www.billionrecord.com

Complete with popups and that stupid thing up in the corner.

I do have the thing up in the corner that you can close, but the pop ups i must say i do not have. or at least i havent seen them.

The Story so far...

okay, I get the idea!

I don't mind paying for a site, I had already assumed something of that sort. I do have a couple friends who run their own sites and was thinking of bringing them in to help "build" the b****rd thing, I'm guessing that's cool?

I am a little lost though. This one sounds fine to me: http://www.powweb.com/webhosting.html
But I don't understand half the stuff it offers. Is 1000 Mb storage a lot when you're talking about audio and audio/visual files? What does Data Transfer/Band Width - 5Gigs/Day (!!) mean really? I'm guessing that's the bit that's important when talking about digital music recordings?

Pretend I don't know anything about this stuff...

Thanks so far though, I'm slowly bringing myself into the 20th century!!! I'd say right now I'm probably 1994. Next step and I'll be 1999, then it's an easy leap to join the rest of the 21st century foxes.

As always, cheers!

1000 megs is all intesive purposes a Gig. 1024 megs of storage.

So you can have that much stuff on your website. Say if you want a whole album of MP3's and at both 128kb and 320kb resolution for both broadband users and dial up users. Say you need 150 megs for the high resolution, and 30 for the 128kb files. SO now you have 180 megs. But you still have over 800 megs left for something like video files...html...pictures...just anything. Hell, I host my own eBay pictures on my music website. lol I just made a folder and called it /ebay and now when I sell something on ebay I can display as many pictures as I want without paying ebay a dime. :D

But back to your needs...

The 5 gigs a day transfer is the most that can be used by a third party.

Say your main page www.irock.com is 2 megs to start with to simply view it. Then if they down load a song, thats another 2-4 megs. If they down load a video, then there is 11-30 megs. Then if you have another few visitor and they only look at the main page and leave, there is another 2-10 megs. ALl this adds up.

My account when I signed on last year was 45 gigs a month, with a daily max at 5 gigs. So over the course of a month I can have people down load up to 45 gigs worth of my bullshit. But if for some unknown reason I got famous, I can have up to 5 gigs a day until my 45 is reached...at which point you will either be socked with an extra charge or they will simply turn off the site until the next month. But 45 gigs is a lot. More than you will probably ever have a need for.

Now going over and having you website turned off sounds bad, but let me also let you know that if you search around you will inevitably be confronted with sites for webhosting that offer "unlimited" bandwidth. Those are almost always bogus. They are "unlimited" within a "reasonable amount". Well, 45 gigs would be considered an obscene amount in those cases.

But anyways...if you do sign up, give me a referal if you will. www.berntson.us

Definitly use www.bandzoogle.com . I love them. It's so simple to use. It's like 6 dollars a month, and there's a thirty day free trial. They are great guys to work with.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks to everyone who has helped broaden my knowledge and understanding (not least of all Mr Jack Daniels), I am going to now go away and do a lot of thinking (and playing, and recording, and saving money).

Cheers! :p
