Scored an MXL V77 offa Ebay a couple of weeks ago...

Took the plunge and did the ceramic tube socket mod myself

Swapped out the stock tube with a new EH 12ay7 and... Oh wow...

This is now my new go-to mic for female vox and I'm sure lots more :)

I've read about some other choices for tubes in this mic (GE 5-Star 6072A, Black Plate GE 5751) does anyone have experiences with other tubes in a V77?

:)

(wow.... So THIS is the Microphones forum....)

;)

nice mic, what did you pay? The tube swap is a joy, both of those really make that bear come alive

I got it for $125, but there was no shockmount...

I figured I can always pick one up later

;)

vvvvvvvvvvverysweet deal!! people pay twice that and thats a good deal

Is this a discontinued model or new ? for I can't find it at MXL.com.

You can get one on eBay for anywhere from $15-30.

Its a pretty darn good mic. There are a few design issues that can be corrected and ways to smooth it out a bit, but that might hurt if it ever becomes a collectors item. It was at one time, now I'm not so sure.

Don't get hung up an tube brand or type as much as model and overall sound. Use your ears. Tubes can vary greatly in sound, even among the same brand and batch. Even Cheap Chinese tubes can sound good if you can find one (which might be difficult). Try to just focus on good quality 12AT7, 12AY7 (6072) or even 12AV7 or 12AU7.

The stock 12AX7 is just wrong for mics, which is why a tube swap to another number is an improvement. I haven't messed with one of those yet, but I'd probably use a completely different tube and transformer. I'd also either change the capsule or add some negative feedback into the circuit, depending on what I was going for.
