Did you say that was "mastered"? It sure doesn't sound like it...
It's very muddy and indistinct... and the drums are completely buried...
The guitar tone is cool, but is hidden under a poor recording!
Decent enough song though -- i'd make the effort to remix it a bit to better define the elements and focus it a bit better. Worry about mastering when you have a mix that works!
Keep at it...........!

If there is any mud left in this tune, it's cause of Jeff's over compression of the all the mixes that went into this tune. I agree that you can only do so much if you have a dead sounding mix to begin with. If you didn't hear it before I tried my hand at mastering it, you should have heard it when I first posted it about two weeks ago.
I can tell you what I did to get to the point that it is now:
First, because it was mashed half to death to begin with, I added no compression.
On the stereo tracks, I used Peak Limit set at +6 db on the pre gain to bring up the volume 100%.
The right side of the stereo mix was about 20% louder than the left. I panned it left just enough to compensate.
The vocals are so overpowering that I could not use alot of EQ on the mix to liven it up a whole lot. I used a Five Band EQ to do what I could without clipping because of the loudness of the vocals and the inability to add more compression to even them out. (I tried using a little leveling compression and it muddied it up BAD!) Anyway, The EQ is set like this:
Lo= Flat
Lo Mid= +1db
Mid = +6db
Hi Mid= +5db
Hi= +6db
Finally I used just a touch of Hall Reverb to brighten it up and PeakLimiter on the audio out to keep it from clipping.
The song (In fact all the songs except Jesus Christ Is King) were recorded "Live" using a Tascam 424MKIII PortaStudio Cassette 4 Track. We have learned alot about recording in this process and the Knowledge gained will be put to good use.
I have listened to this tune on several different setups and it sounds alot better than it did before so, without going back and recording it all over again, (I wouldn't mind, but the rest of the band doesn't want to) this is about as good as it is going to get. Therefore, it is Mastered.
Thanks for your knowledgable comments and I will pass them on to the Band.
Thanks again, Blue Bear!
Blessings!
