Hi guys. I don't think that any of you have every heard of them, but Charles Johnson and the Revivers are really big down here in the south. They wrote this song a few years back and i have always enjoyed it. Then about a week ago, i got out to the studio and layed down some drum tracks and 2 guitar tracks. then, 3 days later, i added the rest of the tracks. here's how they was recorded:

Drums:

5 mics: snare (sm57) kick (beta 52) overheads (mxl603) and a room mic (nady scm900) that i setup in the next room. I compressed the hell out of the snare mic and let the room mic pick up the overtones.

Rym. Guitars:

I ran them though the Pod and into the recorder

Lead guitar:

I pluged it into my Peavey tnt-100 amp and placed a sm57 right at the grill and the nady mic in the other room for a great "old" guitar sound.

Bass:

Ran direct into my ART TBS pre and into the recorder.

Vocals:

run though the art and into the recorder (with a little compression)

anyway, tell me what you guys think.

thanks

ZEKE

Your gettin into fine fella. you did a good job gettin all that tracked and its very clean. good work. You played and sang all the parts? cool..:) Reminds me of a dude I knew from many millineum ago when he was gettin started. Check out Mylon Lefevre sometime, I`m sure you`ll enjoy.

You won't believe this...but I've seen Mr. Johnson a couple times myself... He IS good. Great live sound. He is an arrogent SOB too, for being a preacher too. Anywazz... I gave him a CD of this VERY song for him to hear of my rendition. He kinda freaked that I had the gall to record one of his songs, mumbled some mumbo jumbo and tucked it under his CD/sales table. I asked him if I could use this song on a CD to "GIVE" away to friends, etc... He said "NO". Oh well... I gave one to the the guitar player. He seemed to appreciate it very much.

so....I changed the words, and it is the "infamous" song in the great mastering debate thread that happened about two years ago...or so. "Get your ticket" Anyone remember that bomb!!??

and... your version is pretty good. Not too true to the original, but you can tell the song....mainly because of the words...

oh...it's messiah:eek: ...and I think contemporary might need to be on your spell check too. But then again, I'm a pretty bad speller too...so my corrections may be wrong also!

You is getting some good sounds there man...

So young & so far ahead of this old fart.

Nice work Zeke!!

nice lead vocal. like the drums. some timing issues here and there but nice for the most part.

decent...

Before I comment, a little background info on myself...

1. I am 23 years old and merely a by-ear keyboardist.

2. My musical interests are urban/r-n-b and soul/jazz.

3. I am not a professional (or amateur for that matter) engineer.

4. Never had experience with live recording.

Needless to say my response may be the less "educated" one that is needed to keep things balanced. just jokes, but...
I really like the sound quality that you achieved with the mix. I am not familiar with all of the tech. jargon, but the vocals appear to stand out in good moderation. And the instruments are very cleanly recorded and effectively occupy individual space as a part of the overall mix.

Simply put, I like the recording and though I have never personally heard either of the songs, I think your renditions may be pretty good

Nice basic blues! Good mix. The last guitar lick in the solo is a total clam though. That's the only negative I have. It really detracts from the whole experience and brings it down a level IMHO.

Thanks guys. I'm really glad that you all liked my drum sound. you will not believe how long it took me to get that sound :D

I think your voice has changed a bit since I last listened to your stuff. Did you get some revenge on that bully yet? Just remember, revenge is best served cold. Wiat awhile until he don't expect it and WHAMMO!

I agree with Smokepole "The last guitar lick in the solo is a total clam though."

The drums sound great and the vocals are really improving (like I can sing)

I liked the idea of micing the guitar the way you did, I may have to try that sometime.

Hang in there Zeke, your years ahead for your age and if I lived near you, I would put the fear of god into that POS bully thats been giving you the shit.

Hey Zeke,

Been real busy at work with overtime and all. Finally got our days off back. I didn't have any for almost 3 weeks. Thanks for noticing.

Great song! Great performance overall and very well sung!

I enjoyed it as a cool E-Jam, bluesy/gospel song with a great beat. I loved all the vocals (clean) including the harmonies which gave it a rich chorus effect. I enjoyed the guitar section at about 2:30 and even the little solo piece at 2:50, but also at that 2:50 margin just as the solo piece starts, the guitar did something off. Not the solo itself, which I thought was a neat top off, but some kind of transition thing I think.

I've never heard the original, but I really got into this version; great job! Also, wonderful message!!

Great job, Zeke. I have never heard your work before and I think you did a great job both engineering and performance-wise. Drum sound is awesome and really really dug the vocals and the vocal harmonies.

The only problem I heard was that tempo wavered a bit at the beginning.

Saludos

Terriel- Thanks Dude! I'm Glad that you liked the song. I don't hear any trans. problems, but i did him an off string at the end of the solo, but i can't fix it now. The off-string dosn't last long anyway so it's ok. Glad you liked the Lead guitar. I got that micing trick from Dave "RainMan" ! ( i didn't meet him in person, i saw it on one of his videos :) )

Flapo1- Thanks for commenting on the harmonies! This was the first time that i had ever recorded harmonies and it didn't suck! My vocie is in the middle of changing and i'm almost through Pueberty!

SLuiCe- Thanks dude! I owe it all to Art Pres! (not the best but the pretty good!)
