I own a Fostex Model 20 Mastering Reel to Reel Deck. Incredible deck that can take saturation levels like a 2" Ampex :spank:<----hyperbole, but it was a $1400 deck in its hey! day!
Heads are clean, low hours and I'm the second owner. BTW, here is the last thread having anything to do with this unit at HR.com

homerecording.com/bbs/general-discussions/analog-only/fostex-model-20-a-260185 (can't post URL's yet but it's date is 2008.

Problem: this machine has a digital counter (great because it uses a 3rd track for SMTPE time code) and lots of helpful buttons on the control panel like Reset ), Memory 1, Memory 2 and Auto->, and 1<-<-2 among many.

Problem is it will not play past 0 period, no matter what. I can hold the play button and it will work, but that can't be too healthy.

Any Fostex deck aficionados at HR? Lordy, I hope so. They are the best kept secret out there and urban myth that heads are not replaceable is just that, a myth.

But that's for another time. Who here at HR knows the Model 20 or 80, or the Fostex 16 track, etc.? who might be able to answer my problem.

Right now I've turned the thing off for the evening and will try a different mastering reel brand in the A.M.

But this is weird....like the electronics have gone kablooey. But anything's is fixable- hell, I'd ship it to Australia to get it fixed I love it so much.

If you guys have a page where people can take photos of their gear, I'd love to show you my 95% analog studio.

hi, and welcome!

sadly i can't help with your problem, but i can tell you,

There's an analog section where i'm sure you'll get loads of help,
and there's a 'let me see your studio' thread in the studio building and display section.

Also, get your post count up and then you'll be able to post links and photos and stuff :)

Hope that helps.

Another New Englander ..... this place is starting to crawl with them!!!!

Howdy neighbor.

I can't help specifically on your Fostex, but I recall an awful lot of time code driven gear that would refuse to cross the boundary between 23:59:59:24 and zero (you can tell I worked in a PAL country!).

The solution was simply to start time code at 01:00:00:00 and consider that the zero point.

Dunno if this affects your Fostex but it's worth a brief experiment I think.

That's the great thing about living on the east side of VT- shopping in NH!

Bobbsy that's a thoughtful answer: I've yet to use track 3 or any of its digital domain features. The deck dates to 1986, when the possibilities for digital were all there but not yet on the market. This Model 20 ideally for Fostex was to be part of an entire studio of Fostex equipment, staring with a the Fostex 80 (they even had a 16 track deck, on regular 1/4" tape!)

Off to the analog section. Thanks for the welcome!
