10lbs.of sh*t in 5lb.BAG
Well here is my first official nowhere post. These 4 songs were writen, recorded and mixed in the 5 days following my arrival in the new line up of this semi-established band.I left the song structures pretty much the same as they were but added all new lyrics and vocal patterns. This was the first time I ever recorded just vocals with people I hardly knew.I was ver apprehensive ,but they were all excited by the sound. The guitarist and I mixed them all in one night(BAD Idea...)and I don't like ant of the mixes,I am really just interested in whether or not these song work.Being my worste critic I can barely stand to listen to them anymore.I also don't like the majority of the drum playing.Being a drummer,it was hard to accept this drummers final takes as satisfactory.I would never say this if he was gonna look at the forum(Cause he outweighs me by about 100lbs) but he got no computer and I'll never tell.
So,give a little listen and know that this was all of our first recording and mixing experience...flame on.

I'm with you on the drums, but everything sounds pretty good. I like the vocals, could be a little clearer, and really like the guitars. The band is tight. Keep on grooving.

13 Year itch

This sounds pretty complete and tight. My main sense of it is that the vocals are overshadowed by the guitars. How about pulling them forward in the mix a bit?

Is that a DPS16 I hear (or, rather, don't hear)? :D

Hope so - one of 'em is on the way to me via the big brown truck right now. I didn't hear much noise or hiss...:)

I sang thru a provocal rack effect mod(with every effect on) into a sennheiser 835,most of it is 1 take...

i think you might need a little low-cut on the guitars. I mean, they sound huge and awsome, but kinda overpowering the whole mix, if you know what I mean...I can't hear the bass guitar.

Other than that, I think the performance is great in this song

Yo W.I.S.C...

Another thread with sunglasses  had to click & listen. He's done bustin balls, now he's here to provide toons.

Man, you 'n sam got that Ozzy vocal down, huh? You've got the more "No More Tears" vocal, and Sam's got the scream-age. These songs pretty tight; just gotta work on getting guitar/bass sounds that sit in a mix together better... (Listened to Ashley & 13 Yr.)

Drums on Ashley aren't bad. Cool songs. Mood is what makes 'em good.

Lessee if Sammy will come in here & get some ball-bustin' payback :D

I might actually play drums for these guys.. If you didnt know already, W.I.S.C. is a friend of mine.. He was the drummer for our band for a few years..

His singing is a lot better than his drums!

so...when do you guys decide if you are the drummer...the singer...or the guitar player....or what? draw straws??;)

the songs played back in mono for me... and therefore the fidelity was down many notches to make any comments about the recording, etc.

does have a newyorksabbath sound to it....

Heya WISC: I'm just gonna spill some opinions...take 'em with a grain of salt, because you've already laid out the disclaimers in your post.

Ashley: Great song. Gits are too rumbley. Love the vocals...reminds me of Ozzy meets Patton. That's good IMO. Drums...eh... There's weird stuff going on in the albeit limited stereo field...wavering back and forth here and there. I think the mix of this could benefit from some more attentive panning. Great song...well worth re-approaching! Again love the vocals...they would definitely benefit from a better mic and production...but I know how that goes.

Before I go on to the next song, you and Sam would make a great team.

Relic: Again, great song...I could have a field day with recording/producing this one...I'm sure Sam would too. The gear limitations again are obvious, but the potential is sooooo there. The "mono" is somewhat frustrating because it's all jammed together. But goddam what a great song!

13 year itch: The lyrics that I can make out sound pretty heartfelt. This one builds nicely...gets better as it goes. No need to repeat productions comments. Good song...not the best of the four.

Lost Child: Why does this one sound more muffled than the others? Did you move the mic(s)? This might be my favorite of the 4 too. Yep it is...that stuff around 1:25 on is great. I'd love to hear these...oh nevermind. You get the point.

Stick around Dan....ask questions. I've learned a shitload here in the last 8 months. We all learn from each other. You've got a lot of passion and great ideas so it will be very cool to see your recording progress!

I just noticed Mixmkr's comment that it played back in mono. It's showing stereo in Winamp here...any ideas?

Sluice,
Thanx for takin the time to break it down, bro. There is a remix of the first three that include some of the panning concepts you hinted at(I just don't have a copy yet). The reason lost child spond diff is cuz it was the first song mixed and the only one never remixed.Basically listend to,then mixed on the fly.As soon as I get the new mixes I'll post em.Also I used an AKG mic on that last one.I noticed that mud you mentioned and the sennheiser seemed to correct that,I will definately be using less effect on the vox in the future,I was just gettin off on the sound. My Dad lives in Mercer right on the Sandy River and I've been vacationing on Moosehead my whole life,Next time I go up your way I'll Let ya know...and the Winamp thing Has got me...I ripped em off the CD with Winamp,...?
I would Like to Thank the rest of you for your comments/critisisms,one by one but I gotta take my baby daughter to the doctor...I'll be back

Absolutely...Any free time that I'm not recording, I speand up on that latitude line. My father and I checked out some land on Moosehead, but it's heavily over-priced now (like 200K for 2 acres of rocky hill). We just bought a nice lake lot about 80 miles east of it though. You should definitely let me know...

One of these days I'm gonna go down to LI again and burn one with Sam. :D

it could be two identical sources in both the left/right channels ....hence mono. I doubled checked things around here, but I played this after other stereo files, same path, etc...

It sure sounded mono to me. Plus...I have the playback going thru 2 channels in my mixer, and I was flipping the "mono" button on and off on my mixer, and getting the same results. ...the mix was not collapsing into mono...it already was. maybe I got ear wax equally in both canals...!

thats not my fav genre but I really got off on the layout of that tune Relic, it smokes. The tune lost child really got my attention too. They have a good steady body and rythym to them. Lost child was as mentioned before a little darker but damn the guitar sounded big and fat on it... :)

Ya mix...it definitely sounds mono. I thought maybe there was something wrong with his file, or my Winamp. But I think it's just a lack of panning.

I listened to "Relic", nice riffage for sure. I don't know if i've ever heard a song with that many changes...break downs, well maybe sami's and SLuiCe's stuff...I FRIGGIN LOVE THE WAY YOU GUY'S DO THAT TOO!! Wished I was that creative. Liked what I heard man..

"Ashley"-Good tune-I think the vocals are the best part-the melody is strong and the vocals are strong and sure- They could use some high end presence-to give back what the effects are taking- The rhythym guitar tone is kinda ugly imo-to bottomy-definetely interferes with the vocals-and-I Like distortion as much as the next guy-but theres just not much definition on the guitar--Really liked the vocals once the song gets kickin-great job for the circumstances you described.

"Relic"-Again I like the song-the vocals are good-at least they're more out front in this mix-but this mix sounds kinda funky to me-like it was recorded from the next room or something...Cymbals have some serious phase stuff going on--But I like the song-The vocal harmonies are tight-and the song goes through some cool changes of gears(?)-I'm sure you guys will rock live-and your singing is real good-Rock Bong Island! (Patchogue native)

Nice to hear you stuff man......

........I listened to Lost Child. Cool stuff. Yeah, the recording of the drums is the weak point..... theyre in and out. Cool song though......dug it plenty.

Fire up a fatty and enjoy the place....... welcome:)

Strato-Just moved from the patch myself-Camille lane, north of Brookhaven hosp.,opp side of sunrise.live in ronkonkoma now ,about 100 yard from the train sta.Bong Island(LOL)...that phase trbl you mentioned is prob due to the whole mix being run thru the infamous BBE maximizer,B.SAB gave me some tips and cautioned me on my use of it,
Gurny-Yes the drums are weak, but that's what we got ....for now(Wink,Wink)and consider that cannaon ablaze...
