hello, peoples of the interwebs. i'm new here on the forum, and i'm also pretty new to mixing. i was hoping to get feedback from as many people as possible on my first two songs i've uploaded to soundcloud. i recorded them on my own in my garage and then i mixed (or at least tried to) them using logic pro and some waves plug-ins.

what do you guys think? the two songs are pretty different from each other. i was learning as i did them so they were not really recorded in the same way. anyways, please listen over at https://soundcloud.com/deadlyshades

You might have panned the instruments a bit too hard on "iafy". I get a feeling that the vocal is coming from a different place than the acoustic guitar.
The vocal was a bit lo-fi. Nothing wrong with that but it got a little harsh on the lengthy notes during the calm interlude.

The lead guitar is too loud at around 2:53. It sounds like a horn blowing right in my face.

When the drums kick in in the second song, they overpower the rest.

I'm liking the Beatles-esque vibe on the tracks. Good performances.

wow, great feedback. and i agree! thanks a lot for taking the time to listen schwarzenyaeger.

Well done. I just listened to both and particularly like katherine from a purely subjective standpoint.

Great performances all around. Tight without sounding robotic or forced. Care to share anything about how the vocals and drums were tracked and/or processed? I like the vocal effect in particular. It sounds slightly doubled, but tighter than vocal doubling I normally hear. If you're pretty new to this, you're off to a great start. I've been recording in my garage and den for many years and don't really get close to this sound.

My only thoughts were that I wasn't even 100% sure if there was a bass guitar in there, but if there is, I think it's lacking in both definition and the level. If there isn't - add one. Also, I like the kind of squashed sound of the drums, but towards the end of the 1st track it sounded like the crash cymbals were really cutting off abruptly. I dunno. I struggle with crashes myself. Anyway, take all that for what it's worth (not too much) and consider the source. Good job!

thank you very much heatmiser for great feedback and kind words, you made my day. i will definitely take all you said to heart and keep it in mind for next time. about the crashes, they were all broken and old and fucked up when i recorded iafy. so they would choke up on themselves, kind of. in katherine i used different cymbals.

the vocals were recorded with a cheap condenser microphone. all the vocals are doubled. no tricks. i worked a lot with eq and a bit of distortion to bring the mids up.
the drums were recorded with shure sm57's and 58's as closeups and the condenser microphone as a single overhead/room mic. on katherine, i recorded the drums and the cymbals separately because i wanted to try to use a lot of compression and distortion. so i did the drums first and then the cymbals in a different take. so the drums are squashed but not the cymbals.

IAFY - I liked the sound on this, but think you've got to go for a better mic (even a dynamic), to avoid having that same 'lo fi' sound in every song. The drums didn't sound panned - the floor tom (I assume that's what is was) was kind of toneless in the center. The bass guitar could definitely come up in the mix.
Katherine - bring the bass up again. The reverb/room on the snare makes it seem to be recorded in a different space than the rest of the kit. I like the way the background vocals came up panned hard at the end, think this would be even better if the lead vocal wasn't lo-fi.
