I've been out looking for different instruments to put on the album that I've been working on. I don't know how to play anything but guitar but in the last week I purchased a lap harp and a 1934 Hohner Marine Band harmonica ($8 from an antique shop near my house). I've also got a violin made in 1834 in Germany in my sights, but that's beside the point.

A few nights ago I decided to write a song for the harmonica, since I didn't know how to play it. What popped out was a tune about a very special friend of mine who was raped and murdered (she was stabbed 56 times) after I left her at a carnival in 1990.

Yeah, it's cheery stuff, (I come from Irish extraction, whaddya expect?) but I was actually pretty happy with how the harmonica came out on this take:

you`ve got a nice raw sound going there, I like it for this style.
You could even go a bit more, lo-fi.
I think that would suit this stuff great, I`m diggin the harmonica man, very nice sounding.

cool stuff man :)

Nice sounds. Reminds me of something Neil Young, or Dylan might do. I really like the tones. They fit this song, and seem to have plenty of room. Can't say much, as it seems well done.

Lo fi?

Good recording Brian and a thought provoking song. I think the term "low-fi" (mentioned in your other thread) isn't really an accurate description. Personally, I'd say it's a "minimalist" or "minimal production" approach, since it sounds like what you're going for is an uncoated realistic capture of the performance. Same as the approach most classical musicians use actually. "Low-fi", to me anyway, means a hazy or grainy reproduction of the original sound. Interesting though, because now that I think about it, maybe using a filter to make it grainy and then some old-record scratchiness added might make an interesting effect for particular sections in some of your songs. Izotope makes some plugins that do that.

Hey thanks everybody. Interesting you should mention that Tim, cuz I have been goofing around with the Bomb Factory Cosmonaut Voice Plug-In on one of my tunes. I like your minimalist definition, so I think I'll steal it :)
