So i ditched the computer shite finally. After a year of Delta 1010 fun, it lost its fun because computer fans are too loud, computers are annoying to record with. software metering SUCKS. Computers are about as portable as a 700 pound guy named jed. And compuer screens are also very anoying for many hours.

basically im really impressed with the whole ADAT XT 20. I bought 2 used, one with 42 hours nd the other with 71. Both for $800 each including sync and optical cables, LRC(which is useless kinds). These are a rediculously good product.

I posted something in the Other equipment review about how i got around using the Mackie 1604VLZ for a 16 track adventure.

I have one question though. if i ever wanted to computer record again can i go ADAT optical into a computer and use the ADAT as a set of 8 A/D converters?

Yes, a/d and d/a. But, unlike dedicated converters (at least some), you can only go one way or the other at one time with each deck. In otherwords, you can't a/d on track one while d/a on the other tracks. It would take both decks to play and record at the same time. Like having 16 I/Os at the same time, but not quite! (You can route and submix in the software untill you get your tracks, then go back to 16 i/o's)
I have RME ADI-8, and still use the Adat's meters for recording level. Lots of options like that with light pipe.

cheers

I have a MOTU 2408 mkII that I use with my ADATs and its true that if using machine 1, track 1 to listen to a pre recorded track from the computer you can't record to track 2 but you can record to machine 2 at the same time while listening to machine 1. The problem is, you have to select either a digital (computer) or analog source on each machine.

I have two ADAT XT machines and interface them with a MOTU 2408 to my computer. I use the ADATs mainly for AD/DA converters via the lightpipes. When I am recording, I set one ADAT to analog input and listen to the other recorded tracks through the second ADAT and the analog outputs on the 2408. I really do not use tape for recording, but I am getting to point with the stability of Windows becoming so bad, that I will start doing more recordings with ADAT tapes. I am hoping that the new Alesis HD recorders will solve most of my problems. I will still have a PC, but I will use it for MIDI seq'ing and audio editing.

-It is good to know that I am not the only one out here who has these issues. :)

This is very helpful to me, also (maybe lots of us scratching our bald spots on this?).

Anyway, I, too, just got my first ADAT after spending about a year playing with a low budget computer setup. I needed a way to remotely record 8 tracks simultaneously, and a used blackface was cheap. My first gig is this weekend, so here's hoping I can pull it off.

The one thing I quickly see about the ADAT that I miss from the PC is the editing ability. I'll either have to learn new techniques or dump it into my PC.

I was looking at the Lexicon board for ADAT interface to my PC. Any experience out there? I think the prices I've seen online are like $200 for this, which is much easier on the wallet than the MOTU 2408.

DDev.....

The Frontier WavecenterPCI is around that much if you mainly want to get light pipe. (SPDIF and midi but no analog though.) Their Dakota has been working out great in my setup.
