when i connect my midi out/usb the drums on the actual set dont match the VST on the computer...that is to say, when i play the snare on the set, the computer records it as a tom, so on and so forth...what am i doing wrong?

It is called Midi Mapping.
The note numbers your drum interface is putting out are different than what the computer program is expecting for the right sounds.
There are only a few"standards" out there Like "General Midi" to where a module or virtual synth is always expecting a snare drum to be note number 20 or what ever.
It amounts to you changing the midi note each pad is sending from your module.
On the Old Alesis modules (It has been 10 years since I've done it) you would go into a note set up mode and strike a pad. The module would tell you what note was associated with it. You would simply use the key pad to change the note to what corresponded to the sound you were looking for.

It helps if you have a map of the sounds verses the note numbers, otherwise it is experimenting time.

Also, depending on what VST you're running, you can change the note that triggers the drum sample to what your pads are sending (if changing the pads isn't an option). I know you can do this in Battery 3 among other programs, you can even just hit the pad twice to learn it, but I would recommend changing your drum set if possible, incase you decide to switch to a different/better VST.

had the same problem recroding addictive drums through a roland td9 kit. had to remap all the triggers to their respective numbers. was a chore but works fantastic now.

I have an Ion idm02 and im recording through cubase i found the drum map thing but i have NO idea what to do...im so fucking fustrated...

it is much easier to do it from the module. (what vst and kit are you using?!?)
through the module it takes like 10mins max. i had a look at some midimapper software but i couldnt get it to work very easily

Try Battery - very cool piece of software and easy to use.

there areabsolutely NO ffunctions on the module that came with the drum set...so i HAVE to remap it using cubase. and the vst im using is aukostic drums.

Ive made some kind of progress...ive found that the hihat pad is assigned to F#1, the ride pad is D#2, snare is D1, Tom 2 is A1, tom 1 is C2, splash is C#2, bass is C1. wat the fuck do i do now?
