Village Idiot

The Love Butler
This is the stuff I have worked on for the last month.

Now I just ned to re-introduce myself to the kids, and get my wife back from the Wal-Mart greeter guy.

4 songs I recorded and mixed.

Have a go at anyone of them you'd like:

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1523&alid=-1

I warn y'all now...
These are Christian themed songs.
"Thank you..Umm..This next song is about God..."
heheheh....

If you don't like the lyrics, let your Aunt Gertrude listen to these.

You'd be surprised how many churches won't touch us.
(Except the Catholic Churches..Bad joke there...Sorry.)

The drums were submixed.
But the rest was not.

I did put an incredible amount of effort into these, the most I have ever tried in 15 years of home recording.

But please give me honest opinons/tips/ideas, as I have the thickest skin of anyone at this site :D

Thanks!

VI
:D

I just listened to I Got Jesus.
It got my foot tapping. Liked it. But the vocals were way too far to the back to my taste. It was like being surrounded by the drums and the singer was on the other side of the room. ish.

I just listened to Jesus Luvs You -- I totally dug this song! Great little "Byrds" guitar tribute in there. The only feedback I have is to maybe raise the vox just a tad. Some of the lyrics are kind of buried. Great harmonies, and I also liked the bass at the end. I really liked this tune!

I Got Jesus -- I think I have listened to this one before (did you just post it or has it been up for awhile?) Anyway, I like this one as well. Good use of the harmonica and the 'wacka-wacka' on the guitar (a highly technical term there).

I'll check out the others in a bit. Overall I think you have done a great job of capturing a good sound! Keep it up!

Hmm......

I listened to Jesus Luvs You......

The mix blend seemed reasonable but it was IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL because of the sucked-out mids and those extremely exaggerrated highs! (You damn near blew my fool ears right off.......... I think I heard a 15dB boost at 22Khz there!!!) :p ;)

You need to back off on the brightness and get some punch back into the sound (mids).... there also appears to be very little definition to the low end....!

Sorry, VI... BACK TO YOUR CONSOLE.... NOW! And don't come out until your mix is done properly................!!!

I GOT JESUS
You people never cease to amaze me. A porn-groove Jesus song? That's right. That's just what "I got Jesus" sounds like. The drums are pretty well mixed. The recording sounds like the listener sits on the drummers chair. Maybe a wrong approach, but this has a very live feel to the sounds. The vocals are a bit far back but the song has good stuff in it.

RAINSTORM
The mixing sounds exactly the same. The vocals sound a tad too strong in parts. Maybe too much of *insert a smart frequency remark here* :D So, this song also grooves. The vocalist sounds very soulful, and the mix has captured a very live feel again. The bad performs like a charm and is very tight yet loose (wha?)

TAKE ME
Oh, this sounds like a different singer (or am I completely wrong?). I really envy your production, and how you can make something sound this live and warm. These songs really put me in a good mood. Or maybe I'm just so tired. I just can't find anything to complain right now.

JESUS LUVS YOU
Hmmm... This sounds familiar somehow. Kinda like some 60's hit or something. Are you sure this ain't Beach Boys or something :D What can I say. Hooky melody, a jamming groove and nice production. The production does sound a bit different to the rest. Maybe it's the different guitar tone. I also noticed that the guitar is in the center. That kinda makes this a little one dimensional. Good thing there's some depth in the drums and the vocals.

Awesome tunes Bro. Great message in all of them. Excellent harp work and the band is tight, man. Very good vocals from your side-kick.

The Vocals need to come up in "I Got Jesus" and "Jesus Luvs You," just a bit IMHO.

Some nice Lead Geetar work in "Child In A Rainstorm."

As one Christian Bro to another, Keep up the Great work.

I listened to "I've got Jesus"... The drums are great, but unfortunately they have taken the spotlight... The rest of the intruments are buried...

I love the drum sound, and the rest of the sounds, so don't touch any eq IMO

Just get those other things up front more...

Awesome!

Jesus H. Christ!

Dougie_ this stuff rocks hard!

My only spit in your soup complaint after listening to them all was the occasional harsh vocal intrusion near zero. The mixing decison was VERY close but no cigar. Also the cymblas seemed a bit washed out. Maybe the 128 encoding.

As to your paranoia of not getting the headroom you were after- you got it! Those mixes were phat as well.

I like all of those tunes as tunes- And I mean that!!!

But of course you know

"I Got Jesus" was my favorite.

See Ya in Vernon.

"Lord Willing" hehehehe :D

Thanks Y'all For The Advice

I really appreciate the input you guyz have given.

Now I am sitting aroung analyzing your comments/criticisms trying to figure out how to fix things.

My biggest obstacle would be my "monitors", as these were either mixed down through my headphones or my stereo speakers (Venturi) due to the fact that I do not own any real monitors.

This was all recorded in my basement on a Compaq Presario 533 KHZ with an AMD K-2 processor, an Audiophile 2496 card, a Mackie 1604 VLZ mixer, and N-Track.

It appears the general consensus is that all the vocals were a bit too buried in the mix, so I'll start by looking into that.
They sure sounded up there on my system, but once again, you guyz probably have real monitors to listen to it through, so I don't know how I will fix that problem. :(

"I GOT JESUS
You people never cease to amaze me. A porn-groove Jesus song?"

If that wasn't such a hilarious comment, I might have actually been offended. :D
Thanks, I think, CrankyOne :D
Oh-And you listened to 3 different lead singers there in our band.
I am not allowed to sing...I sound like Roger Whitaker.

Chrisstian & Boydrj:
You must be guyz with real monitors. Thanks for letting me know!

Voxvendor:
Yur comments will make me look hard at my whole mixdown process again. But thanks for your honesty so I can do it right.

Axe4Yahweh:
Thanks for your support and insight.
I think we have the best Harp player in the state.
Looking forward to meeting with your band soon!
You must have real monitors too.

Doc:
You are just being polite because you have met me, will see me again next month, and I have my black belt. :D
But in case you are being sincere, thanks!
Your ears are excellent, and I enjoy your skills.

BRUCE!!!!!

"Sorry, VI... BACK TO YOUR CONSOLE.... NOW! And don't come out until your mix is done properly................!!!"

I am glad there is a Blue Bear at this site.
If there wasn't, nobody serious about recording would ever get sound advice, be it positive or brutal.
Your honesty is what I will always like best about you.
But I am really too drained from giving it my best shot to re-mix any of it right now...

Now if I could just mail the saved dry .wav files to you, let you re-mix the demo, I would be a happy guy.
My band would pay you do do it for us, if you would seriously consider doing it.
Let me know, we are serious.

Thanks again for all the input!

Hey Dougie.... absolutely - I've been doing a number of mixes for web-based clients lately.... that side of business seems to be picking up as more and more DIY'ers realize they've got tracks but no facilities to really mix 'em well!

Email and/or PM me and we can rap about it....

No real monitors here yet. Just a couple of sets of low-end PC speakers with subs and Head Phones. Jeff has some decent stereo speakers he mixes down with in his little building.

I'm running bout the same size puter as you at this time except I built mine. Praying for the funds to build a bigger one with at least a 1 gig Duron so we can get completely away from our Tascam Porta cassettes. I might throw a Delta 44 or 1010LT in this first, though.

Man, it would be Great for our two bands to be able to gig together and when we get our respective recording projects done, maybe we can do that collab that keeps aluding us. ;)

Dude..Your brain is a AMD Athlon running at 2.5 MHZ, and your ears are Event 20/20's.

Axe4Yahweh:
We will be touring soon. I'll let ya know when we are in your hood, we'll hook up!

Next Question...
How come there are not any Islamic Rock Bands out there?

I would love to hear a Speed Metal version of "Allah Akhubar"

:D

Sounds to me like you are back to mixing on NS-10's.

Kidding.....

Man my ZX-80 Sinclair ran at that speed and it couldn't do SHIT!

I hope you're talking about THz...... :)

That sounds cool, D. We have some kinda big youth rally coming up on the 27th of this month. And the Missions Festival on Aug 10 here in Roanoke. Man, it will be great to get back out and play and get away from these machines! :D

Cool tunes. I especially liked I got Jesus and Jesus Luvs You. Both very nice. have you remixed it? The voices didn't sound too low on my speakers. But I have been fooled before ( twice! :D ) because me 'puter speakers aren't reference quality.
I got Jesus was a very nice blues and I liked the sound...it had a kinda authentic blues band in a low-ceilinged bar sound to it. And I could have sworn I heard a Jimi influence in there.
It's nice to hear Christian music that is not corny or predictable. Good work.

listening to 'I've got Jesus'.. Nice drum sound.. Will you be adding singing, guitar and bass to this? :D Why did you just post the drum track?

Just messin' with ya VI, but it's all drums, with LOUD cymbals.. Good tune though..

Listening to 'Child in a Rainstorm' - Nice harp.. I dont know man, it's sounds live which is cool, but it almost sounds too live imhop.. I'm not crazy about these mixes bro.. The vocals are too loud at times and sound very very dry.. Also the highs are a bit much.. Keep in mind you know I'm a novice, but these are my first thoughts as I listen.. Good tunes though..

I'll get back later to check out the other 2...

Nice job overall and the tunes are good, but imhop these need to be remixed.. The highs are killing me man! :D

:D

That is exactly the problem I have been reading here about my mix...There are those of us without reference monitors, who think they did a great job at mixdown, only to have those with reference monitors give us the bad news.... :(

That is actually the best compliment we have received, Lt....
We wouldn't even bother with playing "Christian" music otherwise. For the most part, what is called Christian music is a joke...Fluffy stuff, lame vocals, etc...
The Christian radio staions around here are pure garbage, and they would never dream of playing any of our stuff.

Looking forward to working with you, Lt. Bob. !
