last friday ( im a student and i was home for the weekend) i stopped by the local daddys junky and met a salesperson that really is a nice guy, ive dealt with him outside of the store before for old tape equipment. he invited me to his house and we had a good talk about stuff. anyway, he had a tascam 246 ($250) in great condition transferred over to his daddys and all his other employees were making fun of him. ( they just didnt get it ) so by sunday i had made my decision that it was going to be mine. i traded an old keyboard, an effects board (which i actually made a 5 dollar profit off) and another latter model tascam 4 track. he took off 25 bucks and i got the thing for 100 bucks. i drove back to school with the biggest smile on my face and found out i had no room in the dorm room for it. i finagled and finagled until i found a place for it so my roomate wouldnt get mad (he doesnt get it either).

i am proud to say i have a functional studio hiding away in my closet, with the prettiest multi-tracker ive ever owned. sometimes i turn it on and just watch the vu meters dance.

i have some 'that's' tapes ive been saving up too -

thats my story,
keep the sine wave going,
noah

A lot of people don't "get it", but a working 246 Portastudio can be a great tool for getting your ideas on tape and doing so without any concern what the latest service packs are or if the drivers are gonna crash your computer and all the hours of editing many folks do to put together an idea on a PC.

The real beauty of an analog 4 track recorder/mixer is that it's a self contained music work station that's easy to learn and easy to work with. ;)

I hope you have many productive sessions with it, getting your songs down and of course, the initial lust of just looking at it. :D

Cheers! :)

It's a nice piece of kit!

.............. ;)

those are awesome machines! i was looking to buy one years ago, when i found an audio-technica at-rmx64 for cheap, and bought that instead. the motor in that one has since died, and i just use it as a board now(it has great sounding pre's!).

a part of me still wishes i'd picked up a 246 instead.

ive been loving it. when my roomates away to class i put down a guitar track and usually a few other tracks (vocals, melodica, casio sk-1 tracks). its noise reducion and the whole unit sound better than the 488. cant wait to use it again
