My computer is screwed ( i think)

I recently uninstalled Nortan antivirus. i then restated the computer only to find that when the main windows screen was just apearing an error came up telling me to reinstall Windows. I then did this and everything seemed fine, it wasnt a complete reinstall, it still kept all my programs and files. then i installed AVG and sygate firewall. The next day i installed a Benq cdrw drive and the nero software that came with it, this seemed okay. the next day i couldnt use anything other than the internet and a few card games. i couldnt acces anything like windows explorer or my computer. everytime i tried it came up with a blue screen fatel ecxeption error the code is 0028: 0077076 in vxd voltrack.then a bunch of more numbers. i couldnt find this specific error on the microsoft website. I then tried to rienstall windows. i got as far as the installing hardware devices and drivers bit and every time it gets to that bit it crashes to the same blue error screen. i tried uplugging the cd drive but it still did the same. does anyone know what is going on. i dont really want to take it to a computer reparer.

Well, I can see a few mistakes in the process...

1) Uninstalling Norton Antivirus
2) Partial (not full) reinstallation of Windows
3) Installing AVG

This last time you tried to reinstall windows, was that a FULL reinstall or the partial reinstall like you did the first time?

Interesting you should say that. I Installed the antivirus program last night on my comp. and it 'found' a couple virii that I can find no mention of on the sarc or trendmicro sites. Is this program unreliable?

Both times it just reinstalled Windows but kept all my files and information intact. i didnt wipe anything.

Lots of people say that AVG is much better than Nortan. Nortan was crap.
 
Norton is just terrible. It's an absolute beast when it comes to memory usage etc.
AVG is much more streamlined and does everything you need. Plus, it's FREE!

Try doing a search on the microsoft support site for the error code you're getting, they seem to more often than not have an answer.
 
1. Backup all your data. (Hopefully you've been doing that all along. If not.... it's only a matter of time before you lose it to one glitch or another.)

2. Reformat your hard drive.

3. Reinstall Windows.

4. Reinstall all your other software and data.

Doing things piecemeal and getting it right is nearly impossible with Windows.
Do it all the way and do it right....
 
I Googled "voltrack" and came up with this:

Error Message "Exception Error 00 in VxD DISKTSD from VOLTRACK(04)" with Norton Utilities or Zip Rescue, win95/win98

This primarily affects windows 95 but it might also show up in Windows 98.

Situation:

While installing Norton Utilities, or when creating a Zip Rescue set, a message similar to the following appears: "An exception 00 has occurred in vxd disktsd... this was called in voltrack(04)."

Solution:
This message means that the file named in the error message is corrupted. To correct this problem, rename or delete the file and replace it with a newer or uncorrupted file, as follows:

1. Open Windows Explorer and open the Windows\System\Iosubsys folder.
2. Rename the VOLTRACK.VXD file to VOLTRACK.OLD
3. Restart the computer.
4. Install or reinstall the Iomegaware Tools from Iomega to replace or update VOLTRACK.VXD.
5. Create a Zip Rescue set.

I make no claims as to the quality of this fix. I found other listings for it as well.

Personally, I'd recommend you consider upgrading your OS sometime soon to XP. It's a lot more stable.

Oh, and it appears this problem is caused by Norton.

Yes. Norton products have punished me for trying to uninstall them. Same goes for MacAfee.

Unfortunately this seems to be the best solution. I also believe AVG to be a pretty good anti-virus program.
 
Thanks for all the help. :)

Ive done searches for the error code on the windows site and google. There are alot of very similar codes to mine but there all a little different. each one is a different problem. I cant really see anything to do other than wipe the whole machine and do a complete reinstall. :mad:

I can now get into windows in safe mode. ive uninstalled all the downloaded anti virus and firewall stuff, still not working.ive done some disk scans and system file checks. What else can i do in safe mode?
