Armistice

Son of Yoda
Hi there

It's here! The Jongleurs - Absence.webp

I know some of you have expressed interest in having a copy of my band's CD. I haven't set up Kunaki yet for O/S distribution as I have to wrangle with artwork, and I'll do that during the week, but it'll probably take another couple of weeks before they mail me the test copy etc etc. And although I've set up digital distribution, it's not live yet and won't be for a week or so as we need to have a local blitz on physical CDs to try to recoup the manufacturing costs..

Anyway, with a Kunaki CD, you'd end up with a jewel case / duplication instead of the much sleeker and funkier digipack / replication version that is the CDs that I've had made locally. AND you get, free of charge, CD-TEXT so you can see the song titles in your CD player... :listeningmusic::)

So if you'd like one, and have PayPal, just PM me a postal address and I'll PM you PayPal details and I'll post you a nice one all the way from Australia for a nominal cost-covering fee...:D

Especially if you're already Australian (Ray, I'm looking at you.. ;)) this is a much better way to fly.

Cheers all

Congrats! Any estimate on what the shipping cost will be to the US? $5, $10? That probably is a factor in whether I go with Kunaki or not. (Presumably, you get a bigger cut from the digipaks too?)

Excellent stuff, looks great Armistice. Sounds from recent posts like it's been something of a battle getting to this point :thumbs up:

I think it's about $5AUD.... it'll be cheaper direct because I'm not actually trying to make money off you guys and am happy to cover costs, whereas the kunaki price will be whatever it is plus postage. $10 would cover both direct from me...

Congrats Dave!! Looking forward to my copy.

Setting kunaki thing up tonight Chili... gods of the continual internet connection willing, that is. And presuming I can steal half an hour at the girl I set next to who has Photoshop's computer today to sort the artwork! Thanks..

You're not wrong! Think I'll stay digital next time... :laughings:

Getting too old to force sell CDs to generally uninterested friends and coworkers just to recoup costs, but I wanted the other guy to have something real......

I sold my 80 year old next door neighbour 4 copies... she's going to give them to her grandchildren apparently - and I was going to give her a freebie for having to listen to us recording/mixing through the wall... :laughings:

Congratulations. The cover et al looks excellent, makes me wish I'd strode that path for a few at least.
I already know the contents will be top shelf so look forward to my copy. Paypalling done.

Thanks ray, got the $, on their way in the morning - I'm really happy with the packaging and glad we went this route.....

The economics sort of run to "Can we sell 100 at $15" (or the equivalent - which is a reasonable price in AU$) - that's the cost recovery point for a minimum 500 buy via replication. It could have been cheaper but we needed to pay for artwork to commercial standards, which cost $200 + GST after giving them the concept and pictures etc.

We're betting we can sell $1500 worth, and I've also structured the digital distribution options so that at the moment, this CD is all there is... and we just need to have a sales blitz of actual CDs in the first couple of weeks - after that, people lose interest quickly.

I guess it doesn't make sense to do this, but if we were sensible people, would we be playing music?

So, this never would have happened at all had I not pushed Richard to do a bit more work before child #2 came along - due in a fortnight - I didn't actually think he'd go for it because he wasn't feeling the love, and we hadn't played anywhere since the beginning of winter, and I was thinking if he didn't well I wasn't that far short of an album of my stuff, so I'd head that way - but I needed to give him the choice - and he did go for it and I'm glad he did.

I always told him it's too hard, on one meeting per week or fortnight for a few hours, to be a live band and a recording band. So we just concentrated on recording.

We tracked a few more of his tunes that we never had recorded, and I resurrected some old demos of his, stripped everything out but his vocal and reconstructed the tracks around that - playing most of the stuff, but getting him in to do acoustic here and there. Camouflage and Time Is On My Mind were done that way - that way we ended up with a balance - 6 of his, 7 of mine, he sings 7, I sing 6...

And I've been out the door at work at 5pm every day since October last year, going home, mixing, recording, mixing, recording... and on weekends too. Several hours a night... to get it all to this standard. It took so long and so much work. F-ing snare drums were driving me nuts...

So when it came to the "what to do with it now?" question - I pushed the "proper" CD thing... you can't put this much work into something and just end up with a link on the internet and a few files on your iPod. I wanted a real CD... and so did he when he thought about it. Something he could show his kids, along with his father's recordings (from The Strawbs, as you'll recall). History. Family. That sort of stuff.

And if you look at the back cover of the CD, you might think that I did all the work, and I guess I did in terms of mixing and recording etc, but I'd never have got here without his awesome contribution via songs, and I would never, ever have worked out how to sing well enough to record my voice - and what he does with his random harmonies on my songs and his, completely opened my mind to other possibilities. It's one of those situations where he doesn't actually know all that much about musical theory, so he's not stuck in the same grooves as everyone else, and comes up with beautiful melodies. Check v2 of Mother... that's me going up and down and all over the joint in harmony whilst he sings the lead... would never have come up with the concept on my own, although he wrote some of those lines and I wrote others..

So very much a 50/50 thing.

Oh, that's right, no-one asked... I'm having an oversharing moment...:laughings:

The management of The Jongleurs apologise for this over-emotive rant which has been officially explained by too much Jack Daniels on a Monday night... :laughings:

LOL - did I write all that? Seemed so much shorter at the time.... :spank: Bad Armistice...
