my Boogie Mark III speakers

All this Boogie talk on another post, I've got a question some of you may be able to help me out with. I've got a Mark III Simulclass hardwood boogie I had Mesa make in 1989 (EQ, reverb). I just had them send me new pre and power tubes, and I switched out the original EV Black Shadow 200watt speaker (serial # 5150) for a new celestion V12-60 60 watt speaker. It's not as clean or loud as the EV, but for my current rock band, it's warmer and smoother.

We just played an outdoor gig Saturday and I strapped on my wireless to cruise around the crowd 50 feet in front of the band. I did not mic my amp into the PA (smaller gig and no sound man), and I noticed my boogie had a very directional sound, or better said, a very narrow angle where the amp is loudest with major presence, and then a much larger angle where the volume and presence drops down a bit. I actually liked the sound better when I was not directly in front of the amp (less harsh).

Would it sound OK to put some sort of diffuser in front of the boogie to stop that direct high output line of fire, or is the only solution going stereo or micing the amp? Is it too cheap of a celestion speaker and that's the problem? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tom
