I've had this for a couple weeks, and I really like it on certain sources.

For backing vocals, or vocals that you don't want a high-end sheen on, it's pretty dang good, at least on my voice. I placed the center of the mic right below my mouth without a pop filter, and it was smoooooth!!! Not great for everything, but when you're looking for a sound that's a departure from the "in-your-face", enhanced sound of a lot of LDCs, this is a great alternative.

On amps, it's really great. Much better than a 57, in most cases. A lot mellower and richer, with a much better low-end response.

I read two reviews that stated that they liked it on acoustic guitar, so I tried it on that, and I didn't like it at all. Not enough sparkle on the high strings. It was better than any other dynamic I've used on acoustic, but I would still never use it on a serious recording. I might consider using it live on acoustic if I didn't want to use a condenser.

I liked it all right on snare, though I think a 57 beats it for the type of music I do. The Ball added too much low end thump to the sound.

I really liked it on floor tom. It handles low-mid frequencies really well, and also captured the drum's attack well. This and amp were the sources that this mic really shined on.

I did not like it on kick. The frequencies below 100 hz seem to get lost with this mic.

I didn't try it on bass amp, but I suspect that it would be great in this application, especially for rock and punk genres where the really, really low end frequencies in bass are not as important (and, usually, just get in the way.)

With all this said, don't buy any hype that, because it's phantom-powered, it combines the frequency response of a condenser and the rugged durability of a dynamic. (I think I read something like this in the Sweetwater catalog.) Basically, it's just a really good dynamic that happens to be phantom powered. In fact, it is probably the best dynamic I've ever used (which may not be saying much because I've never used a SM7 or a Sennheiser 441).

I think Blue's mic designs are weird, but I find it hard to take the Ball seriously, and actually think that its GOOD. Cheers for the review :)

I don't think my not-fully-developed impressions about the mic qualify as a "review," but I definitely enjoy the mic.

I do agree that it looks a little toy-ish, though.

cominginsecond,

what kind of mic pre were you using?

btw, great review. i enjoyed reading it. you told me what the blue ball would and wouldn't do. you're right that it doesn't put across the shimmer on an acoustic guitar. you don't get that with a dynamic the way you do with a fet condenser.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.

I was using a DMP3 for these comparisons. It's the only stereo preamp I have.

Thanks for the preamp info. FYI, one of my buds tried it on bass amp and said he didn't like it.

Hmmm, I'll have to try it one of these days. I don't own a bass amp myself anymore, so I'll have to borrow one. Thanks for the info.

What is your impression about the ABS plastic body? Somehow plastic strikes me as cheesy.

I'm really interested in the Ball, but put-off by plastic.

BTW... Boise is my home town.

:D

The plastic body is well constructed. I liked it all right.

So, you escaped Les Bois, huh? Good for you!

Left in 1967, went back to visit a bunch of times, but found it no longer felt like "home". After Dad died, no need to go back at all. Clicking the Ruby Slippers sends me to Sacramento.

What is the weight of the Ball? I'm still choking over plastic. Does it feel manly and like a precision mic should feel? If I bought one, it would be on a lark, and sight unseen.

I expect the sound quality to be a noticeable mark above the SM58. True?

It's a lot heavier than I thought it would be. It's definitely substantial.

Yes, it is a significant improvement over an SM 58.

yuk. that is what methinks of the blue ball.

better than a 58? well the 58 has a more natural sound to it. the blue ball has some weird resonances in its response that gives it a natural wiffle ball sort of sound.

on distant sources the strange resonances become unbearable (unless you are going for that wiffle ball sound), but on close micing it becomes tolerable. it has a hair more high end and low end extension than a 57 family type mic- i would rank it quality wise somewhere between the 57 and an ev408/468.

price-wise- it is in a class with sennheiser 421s, beyer m88tgs- the upper-middle class (lower upper class) end of dynamic mics.

so if you want to pay $200 new, $140 used for a mic that almost sounds as good as a medium quality dynamic ($120-$75) on close micing. and worse than a low quality dynamic ($75-$50) on far micing (except if you want some sort of special effect)... then go for the blue ball.

yea, i am pretty bitter i bought this mic. i was thinking of getting an ev re38 but i got the ball instead. big mistake.

Well, there is a 0.500 batting average... not nearly as high as the ubiquitous SM57/SM58.

Looks like I will go elsewhere for a high quality dynamic. Guess it is time to look closer at the Sennheiser or Beyer.

<<i was thinking of getting an ev re38 but i got the ball instead>>

yeah, i remember i stole that RE38 out from under you for like $165 shipped or something along those lines, since it had been in their inventory for a while (you weren't the only one with your eye on that one). lemme tell ya, that was one of the best purchases i've made. i've used it on vocals, acoustic guitars, kick drums and i plan on using it on amps whenever i get around to it, and it's kicked ass on all of the above. combined with the symetrix 528 i just picked up, talk about a winning combo.

not to rub salt in the wound or anything, of course. :p

seriously, though, does anyone have any idea where i could find information on the RE38 (or any of the older EV mics for that matter)? google searches turn up little to nothing, and EV's website pretty much sucks (certainly not as comprehensive as shure's).
