My best mix yet

Good effort, but a few things I noticed:

You've got phase issue happening on the drums -- the OHs have a washy, unclear image. As well, they sound very roomy and boxy, which IMO doesn't sit well in the context of the song. You've also got them way too loud in the mix. Watch the timing towards the end of the song - bad glitch there.

The piano sound doesn't appeal to me at all - especially at the beginning. It sounds wooly and muddy.

The bass seems to sit far too heavy overall - I would have gone for more articulation and definition instead of just the low "boom"....

Some more ambience and air around the vocal would have been nice -- create space for the vocal to sit by building the other instruments around it -- sounds like you did the opposite when you mixed this.

Cool tune - reminiscent of Beatles or Wings stuff - just need to polish the production side a bit more!

Thanks for the quick reply. I think the piano sound is the best I'm gonna get out of my old out-of-tune upright, especially since I only currently own two halfway decent microphones (one of them being a dynamic) which I used to record everything. But if you know of a way to get it to sound cleaner by EQing it or whatever let me know.

If you think this bass is low and boomy you should hear some of my other stuff, heh. I thought I was making it more articulate this time but maybe I should cut out some of the low and and boost the trebel more.

Thanks for your comments, they were very helpful!

I actually like the piano. I think it really fits the song. And I think the roomyness of the drums fits it, however, there are some panning issues, and I can't hear much kick drum. I don't have it set up to switch to mono, so I can't comment on any mono/phase issues.
I think an upright bass would suit the track better.
And uhh, sorry, but I don't think the vocals fit it at all.

I like ya....

I think it is a cool song. Piano struck me as being an upright acoustic. So many people including me like a synth for its perfect sounds. This reminded me of the Beatles. Are you a fan? Anyways, for all it's limitations your sound is good. I would have brought up the vol on drums and vocals. I would have also doubled vocals in spots. But hey thanks just my opinion.

Thanks, I am a huge fan of The Beatles (who isn't?). I've been considering investing in a good synth as soon as I can spare the cash, but I also have a fondness for the old upright sound. It's unique.

Doink, I would have preferred to use an upright bass on this track, I too think it would have suited it better. But I don't really have access to one, so I had to make do with my electric.

I like the piano sound a lot. Of course, I'm not a piano player.

But I think the whole thing sounds overdubed. Which I'm sure it is. What I mean is that recordings should sound as though they were tracked live and this one doesn't. Using a click track/metronome would help much of this.

I tend to record everything else before the drums. That way I can insure that the other tracks are not losing time because the drums are slightly off. This helped me a ton when I first started recording.

But overall, I like the song and the feel, just need to get a few mix and tracking things down and you're all good.

This came in through the bathroom window?

Duuuude, I didn't know there was a third, missing disc to the White Album!
;)

Really cool. I'm not listening for technical things too closely, since my speakers are shite, but as a gritty old classic rock type of recording....very sweet.

Nice work man.

Im a sucka for real pianos (shame noone uses them normally) and this is one of the very few independant things Ive heard around here that sounds professional. Good work!
