ah, the joys of new guitars!
LOL

this is called "1st tracks"....
in memory of a particularly good day of riding and skiing at powder mountain with GVLive, in the ogden mountain area a couple of weekends back.
the name of the song is self explanatory..... :D

I used the new custom USACG strat, which i've decided to call the cream machine, to do all the guitar parts.
it was a blast, to try to find new sounds..
this was the first time i've really recorded anything with it.
i'm still getting used to it, trying to learn how to play it.

the cab (1x12, celestion greenback) was miced with the ADK hamburg for the actual recording, this shot shows a AT4033)..
signal into a A Designs Audio MP-1, into a dbx compressor, into the ART DPS for digital convert.

and here's my recording setup.

i know, it's pretty modest.

the drums were done with acid.
no, i didn't take any.
i don't think......
;)

bass was done direct with the sansamp bass di, running into the a designs preamp, into the art dps, digital into the vs.

njoy.

Excellent playing, and the new guitar sounds fantastic! I'd be pretty happy with that! Mix is well done too - nothing but good stuff happening here....really enjoyed listening to this.....

CyanJaguar -
thanks for listening.... glad you liked it!

it's kinda weird, mixing a drum loop (acid 4.0).... and it's pretty much set in stone...
for example, i didn't really like the reverb on the snare, and the fills.....
it just wasn't eq'd the way i would have liked it..

but once i was mixing it, i decided i just had to go with it, so i tried to mix the other elements (guitars and bass) in such a way as to complement the drum sound i was stuck with....
and it made me visit some effects settings i probably would not have, if i hadn't stuck myself in that spot!
thanks for checking it out!

any last comments before i pull it off the wire?

i'm thinking of having my luthier do a little more shaving down off the neck...

i did this with my carvin when i first got it...
the finish is really not an issue.... it's only got 2 coats of poly-wipe on it, and this feels really, really good.....
so, half a day to refinish it... no biggy....

anyone else done this with a bolt on neck guitar?

Sounds good... The guitar work on it is excellent... Sounds like a good guitar you got there but what really makes the instrument is always the player... Great mix too man...

Sounds great man...very nice playing and really good tone....sounds like you got yourself a nice guitar....as well as some pretty impressive chops!!!

Yeah, some very nice playing and a nice tone there wanker/shredder. :D

thanks for the listens folks!

variaxman-
thanks for the kind words...
strat's heading to the luthier, for some neck shaving!
wonder if it'll sound any different.....
;)

true-eurt-
thanks for listening.
wanker, is not a bad word.
:D

Good sounds man! I wish my strat sounded that good! Unfortunately, I think that currently has more to do with the player than the guitar :(

What amp are you using there? It's really letting the character of both your guitar and your playing shine through.

GITAH iz GUUT
I kept an eye out for a wanker but this wasn't any where near as self indulgent as you foreshadowed - well done.
The guitars sound like real guitars - double plus good.
The piece also sounded like you enjoy playing the guitar & not tugging it.
Down grade ALERT.
Cheers

sile2001-
thanks for listening...
the amp, is a 1981 mesa boogie mark2b 60 watt head....
the cab is a roland 1x12 closed back, with a 30 watt celestion...
i change the settings for every track... so theres' no basic setting on the boogie, i just twist the knobs to find the sweet spot for neck, bridge, crunchy, saturated, etc....
i do have a Yamaha DG stomp in the effects loop..... providing a touch of reverb or long delay on certain parts...
and some of the effects were added on mixdown, for a little more spatial seperation...

rayc-
wanker alert!
LOL
yeah, it's a lot easier to just fly at it, than it is, to try to be, not subdued, but articulate....
it WAS fun doing this... because as i'm going along, i'm hearing new sounds i've not heard (from me) before, and it's quite inspiring...

maybe that's why guitarists like so many different guitars, all those different sounds inspire different ideas!
duh..
LOL
well, thanks for listening!!

for what it's worth.....

i went back to my raw unmastered version of this song...

and re-mastered it using Sonar.

i just got my new PC put together, and am just now delving into trying my hand at mastering within 'the box'.......! ;)

the 2nd song on the page, is this same recording....
it's the "1st tracks- sonar" version......

if you would, compare the 2, and tell me which you like best...
i personally, think the sonar-mixed version has a more open sound to it, even though it had a more aggressive compression scheme applied.....
i used a 'vintage hard compression' program on it....

damn, what a nice track! You've pretty much set my mind on what pickup to get. :D

Very, very nice!!!! I wanna Boogie even more now!!! You're not in a band are you? I'd love to come see you play, if you are. I'm not far away, so that would be awesome if you are.

Excellent work!!

IronFlippy
thanks for listening..
yeah, i really like the bill lawrence pickups....
they are incredibly even across the span of all the strings....

tourettes5139
boogies...... people love em, or hate em..
mine's old enough, that it really doesn't sound like a modern boogie at all..
you couldn't compare the sound of mine with a rectifier, or subway rocket, or nomad...
hell, even the later model Mark series doesn't sound like this one..
so if you DO go looking for boogies, keep that in mind.
mine dates back to 1981..... it's a mark2b.
to my ears, it's like a super hotrodded fender bassman or deluxe.....

i'm not gigging right now..... only writing and recording....
but if i get something happening, i'll keep you in mind...

updated link with a fresh pass of the multiband compressor and limiter...
should be a cleaner sounding recording..
