just made a quick trip to the states and picked up two mxl604's. I went in to get the 603's but it appears they have been replaced by the 604's with omni option, sounded good to me. I forgot about the matched pair phenomenon and just grabbed two from the shelf. How important is it to get a matched pair? I want to use them as drum overheads and for acoustic guitar.

For most purposes, a matched pair is not necessary. Of course, it matters how close the two you have are. That's a crap shoot. Bottom line- if they sound OK to you, then they probably are. If you are recording Pablo Casals, it may matter, but if you are, I doubt you'll be using a pair of 604's. Unless you run into a problem, no worries.-Richie

Thanks for the input. I'd like to play around with the omni option of the 604's, but I'm not that experienced with omnis as overheads on drums. I really like the separation of the cardioids, any views on advantages of one type over the other? Would one be better than two?

Omnis are better as an all arounder IMHO, no proximity effect, coloration is less than card. The omni picks up sound from all directions. The resultant differences are that the cardioid will generally give you a better working distance, and it will exhibit "proximity effect", which is a bass boost the closer the mic is to the source..the omni will generally have a smoother response with no proximity effect, but since it picks up sound from everywhere,.,,,,you are at the mercy of the room. Bad room-Card...good room-omni...how I do it anyway,.
as for mono vs stereo, look in the "recording techniques" area of this forum and you will see a thread on that very subject..
