Getting better
Hello all.

After futzing about with (in order): ART Tube MP, Audio Buddy, ART two channel, Meek MQ3 and, finally, the DMP2s in my Omni Studio, I have finally stepped up to what I consider a solid signal path with an RNP I just ordered, which will be added to the RNC I just received. My main vocal mic is now a nearly-new V77 tube mic.
I have two questions:

1. As I haven't heard this combo yet (waiting on the RNP), what can I expect? Is this good quality for a home studio/hobbyist doing acoustic and rock stuff?
2. I'm still a rookie at compression in general and the RNC in particular. Can those of you who have used it to track vocals share a couple of starter settings or techniques?

Thanks as always for any and all responses.

Fab

PS: My other mics are V67, SP B1, MXL 603s (X2), Shure Unidyne

Thanks Henri. I can't wait to get it connected and recording!

Anyone have any suggestions on the RNC settings. I know, I know, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to compression. However, my lead singer is powerful and sometimes needs to be tamed with a compresser on the way in. Those who use the RNC, do you have a sort of starting point on a vocal?

well RNC settings are genre dependant as well as singer dependant...when i'm doing vocals its always in super nice mode...i mostly do rap which is a genre where the vocals are smashed to bits....i try to get at between 4db to 8 db of reduction...fast attack about .8ms for the 'plosives' and sss's...release is at .5 ms my ratio is 10:1...my main vocal mic is the sm7 which is a really low output mic so my threshold is usually around 15-20db..

with a singer...settings are just less extreme...slower attack and release...and lower ratio...

it really depends on what you want out of the RNC. do you want it to function as a limiter and keep him from clipping? or do you want it to constantly work?

i'd start with a somewhat quick attack (not too fast, though), a moderate release, and the ratio around 2:1 or 3:1. threshold and makeup gain will depend on the levels you've got going on. make sure you've got Super Nice engaged.

then play around with it from there and see what sounds good.
