I'm new to the forum and was curious to see if anybody has any experience with MXL mics.

Welcome to the boards. There is a ton of info and opinions on MXL mics here. Just use the search function. As for me I still have a pair of 603's They were some of the first mics I bought when I started and I still find use for them. Also the long discontinued V77s is a very nice mic as far as Chinese mics go. Add an upgraded tube and it's very useable. Just search. It's all here on the boards.

I have 3 MXL 604's (upgraded versions of the 603) and they made great starters for me. Even now that I've upgraded I still use them for other things. I basically got two nice sticks and a nice LDC so now I can use the nice sticks for drum OH's while using the 604's on other drum parts. Even with a 57 and a beta 52a it's nice to have the 604's to mic more specifically.

Used a V67 on a young female singer; 99% of it was very good sounding. Some sibilants were troublesome, but for the money, the mic did very well.

Best,
C.

Just recieved today the 990/991 Audio Buddy package, did a few tests and I can say that they are not bad at all. I mean, for $99 you can't ask for much.

depends on which model you're talking about. some are quite good for the money.....some are real pieces of crap.

i've got a pair of 603's (with both cardiod and omni capsules), which do nicely on acoustic guitar, mandolin and occasionally drum overheads. i've got a V67 which is nice on some vocals and drum overheads, a 960 tube mic which seems to excel at vocals and not much else, and a V77 tube mic which has been excellent on just about everything i've ever used it on.

judiciously chosen, you can cover a lot of bases for not a lot of dough. the winner, without a doubt, is the V77.

cheers,
wade

My experience with the 603, 991, 990 & V67 is that they all have hyped high end. I would not consider them for OH's or acoustic guitar any more. Maybe the V67 on a rare vocal.

Hold out for Chance's next group buy on this forum and you'll get much more quality at an even lower price that MXL pricing. Well worh the wait if you can hold out. The 310 mics are excellent for the price and easily beat out the 603.

i'd agree that the 603 cardioid caps have a hyped high end......but the omnis most certainly do not. the omnis are quite good on overheads--especially for the money. although my V77 is on pretty much perma-overhead duty.

and i'd love to hear your V67........b/c hyped in the high end is about the last thing i'd say about it. that said, i don't find much use for it anymore......but that's for different reasons, most of them in the mids. :p

cheers,

Have seen them being used... they sound great as overheads. I don't know really for anything else though... but I've heard great reviews :)

Man, I would die for a V77 schematic, since they aren't made anymore.

Luckily the Royer mod comes close or is maybe slightly better!

Thanks for the help. I'm always looking for inexpensive gear and picked one up a few days ago. I'm excited to give it a try.

Which one did you get and how do you like it?

Thanks,

I have a Royer mod mic with a Peluso 89 capusule. I got it from Koji. Now I'm not sure if you had your hands on that mic. But I do have a V77 and the Royer mod is much better. At least to my ears.

tom-- again, phil didn't do that one-- he worked swapped the capsule into the modded tcm1100 with the double sided 89 (dave thomas did the rest of the mods on that one) :)

I am friggin dense, ain't I. Ok, but the Royer mod does have 89in it too. A great sounding mic. Gets much more use than the V77 (but I don't think I'll part with the 77 any time soon)

A lot of the MXL mics work fine for me. Here's a track using the V77 on vocals; no eq, no pop filter, nothing:

(The sax was recorded with a Shure SM7.)
