I know this is a cheaper SDC but I was curious on opinions. I wanted to get something to start the stereo acoustic recording as outlined in the recording techniques area and I found a stereo pair of the 993s for under $200.

Is it worth it?

FWIW: Currently I only have the AT2035 running through M-audio mobile pre going into one of 2 computers, 1 windows pc with mixcraft and the other is a mac running logic pro.

I can't speak for that particular mic, but I can speak with the 'buy cheap-buy twice' experience.

Like I say, that specific mic might be fine, but for a very reasonable price difference you could save for a pair of sm81s and use them for the rest of your life.

I know I may purchase alternatives in the future, but I'll never replace them.

I have read good things about them online but that doesnt mean much, they originally retail for $300 from what I'm seeing, I'm guessing a new model is out or they werent selling because they dropped the price to $179, I was able to get 12% off plus had a gift card for $20 so I'm getting a matched stereo pair for about $140. I figure for just adding a couple mics to the collection that's not horrible but didn't know if anyone had any experience with these in particular.

I'm going to pick them up either way I guess and save for more. I do understand what you mean though steeno so don't think I'm ignoring you there, and as always I apprecaite your input.

Nah, that's cool man. Many of the MXLs get great rep, so I might be jumping the gun.

Let us know how you get on either way though, yeah?

Definately, I'll post up a few sound bits and let you decide. Should have them by Wednesday. I'm not expecting amazing quality but at least I'll finally have 2 mics to start doing stereo recording setup on the acoustic which is something I've been wanting to try since I read the entire sticky thread on acoustic micing.

Given my experience to date with MXL's they're probably good.

Here's a guy recording guitar with 993's. You have to skip to about 3:12 to get to the recording part. The guy is utterly tone deaf as a vocalist but the mics sound pretty decent to me.
