MXL 990 vs. B.L.U.E. 8-BALL

just wanted to get some sorta feed back regarding these two mics. I currently have the MXL990 mic but was thinking to upgrading to a B.L.U.E. 8-BALL mic, after being told fabulous things about it... and I wanted to see what Home Recording individuals had for opinions and critiques on both mics. And one more question... call me an ignorant dumb ass for not knowing this but... do all condenser mics have to be phantom powered?

Help please...
 
I owned the 990 for a bit and thought it sounded boxy. I've heard some people say it's a good mic. I have'nt tried the other mic. What I'd really like to know is how the 990 sounds modded.
 
yeah... it does sound boxy and gives it like a muddy sound... no matter how well your acoustics are.
 
I hear it sounds pretty sexy with a tube in it.
 
I like the 990 for some stuff, it's fine for the price...I know nothing about the 8-ball
