hhmm... $70 at musicians friend...and you get the case and shockmount too at that price. Dang. I'd like to hear opinions too, I suppose.

Dang that's cheap! Does anyone know anthing about how it sounds!?!?! How does it compare to the SP B mics?

hmm, ripping off a tlm103 for 70 bucks with case and shockmount...just doesn't sit well with me.

plus, now that brent casey is gone...who knows about MXL.

hehe, these two theories are totally unfounded...

hey wes...
That was my kneejerk reaction too... without brent....

But then I remembered somewhere on this site where he claimed to have had virtually nothing to do with one of their mics, I believe it was the 603.... I dunno, time to search I suppose.

If this mic turns out good my wife is gonna shoot me

Pete:cool:

actually it may have been the V67?

becuase I believe Brent was "the man" behind the 603s

Its $70 for Gawds sake, a couple of you order one and report back. Not like you're out anything.
Brent designed the grill on the 603 I think and that was all he had to do with it.

:D I believe Brent's involvement was fixing all the bad ones before they shipped. If you own a 603, chances are, it was custom-moded by Brent himself.

As for the 603, it is an adaptation of the MXL600 which is a nod to an East German design that is a take-off of a West German design. The difference is mostly in the capsule. I only aided in selecting the actual diaphragm material, the grill material and determined a suitable spacing between the backplate and diaphragm as there were some related handling noise issues early on. Most of the design elements which I recommended for the MXL603 were not actually implemented in the production versions of the mic due to cost and manufacturing limitations.

Found it. The thread is "Brent Casey in la casa"

Look at the frequency response curve for the MXL-990. Now look at the frequency response curve for the MXL-600. So my first reaction is: Don't trust the fuckin' curve on the MXL-990; it's wrong. The basket makes a big difference in the sound of a mic.

Published curves aren't that important to me anyway, since they are mostly all wrong, or flat out lies. In this case (as with some of the SP curves), they didn't have the right equipment at the time of printing this stuff to do real curves. It's no big deal to me, but if you don't understand how these curves get printed, it's easy to be fooled.

I believe that the 600 is actually the 603 with a fancier grill. It's either a 20mm, 6 micron capsule from the 600, or the 603, but in a larger, side address basket. Similar to what AT did with the 4041.

I saw it at the show, but I have no idea what the larger basket will do to the sound. It might be a very good mic - or not. Wayne is sending me one to test. We'll see.

It doesn't look like a TLM103, at least to me, it doesn't; the grill is round, not truncated.

I have a SP B1 here, so it will be an interesting comparison.

KNow what? I wonder if that shockmount would hold/fit my TLM-103? THats like a shockmount with a free mic.
Anyone know the dimensions on this thing?

MXL webpage has 2 different sizes right next to each other. Geez, which one?

You go first :)

I have a REAL tlm-103 on the way, the only thing I am interested in this mic for is its shockmount. Its only $70, just buy one, thats only a days pay.... :)

Of the cheap mics, I have found myself rather interested in the ADK line... a few people opened thier mouths and got me searching for info, I have found some pretty good evals on them, they are considered more of a colored, smokey mic and are pretty cheap at about $160 each. I understand that the A51 type IV should be avoided, but the type II, III, and V are very nice.
Since I dont have any really colored mics, I am going to check one out here pretty soon, and if I like em, probably get a pair for stereo rooms and whatever else they work out well with. They are specifically modeled around a Neumann U67, the only thing, supposedly, holding them back is that the capsules dont really meet neumann tolerances, but they sound great. I can neither confirm nor deny that, but check out the mics at adkmic.com, and there is a current thread about them over at 3daudioinc.com and elswhere if you look around.
Anyone here have one?
Peace.
