Hi everyone. I just purchased an MXL 990 microphone and a Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer. The only things I have plugged into it are the Microphone, the headphones, and an output and input wire running from the mixer to the computer so I don't see any reason for there to be any interference. The problem is no matter how much gain I have from the mic, there's horrible background static. Yes, I have the phantom power turned on and yes, the XLR cable is brand new, also. I've tried it in FL Studio 10 and I've tried it in Acid Pro 7 but nothing changes. I continue to try tweeking the knobs and messing with different stuff but nothing changes. If someone could give me any pointers, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Can you beg/borrow/steal another phantom powered mic and spare XLR cable? This'll let you do some effective testing. If the static is still there with a different mic and cable, you probably have a faulty mixer. If the static is gone in the new setup then swap back to your MXL and the new cable. If the static is back, then it's your mic. If it's still gone, you probably have a faulty cable which you can confirm by using your cable with the borrowed mic.

Since all your gear is new, there's a reasonable chance that something arrive with a problem and needs replacing under warranty. Trouble is, you need to do the sort of detective work noted above to chase the problem down.
