I'm thinking about getting a pair to try out on toms. Has anyone ever used them for this purpose before? If so, how did they sound?

Lately I've been using 2001s for toms. I can't stand them for anything else anymore and they are silly-cheap.... so I said, "WTF, I'll try them on the toms"
Depending on the kit, WoW! I got some excellent results. Caputered all the meat.... much better than 57s. More bottom and better attack.
But like I said, it depends on the kit. Some other results were just ho-hum.
I'm sure it's all about a large diaphragm and the accurracy and speed of a condenser vs a dynamic. But up until the last few years, who among us would risk their good large diaphragm condensers with a drummer
Long and short: give it a shot!

BTW: You'll want at least three.... don't forget the floor tom!
Unless you just stick one 'tween the racks and put the 2nd on the floor tom.

would be nice if it had a pad, too...............................

I've only got a rack and a floor tom. I'm playing on a four piece.

I would highly recommend using a triggered gate setup with the
MXL2001/Tom Tom recording setup though.

1.Stick a cheap trigger pad (pintech) to the shell of the drum.

2.run that trigger into the sidechain of a noise gate.

3.run the mic to a phantom powered pre, then to the in of the gate, finally run the out to your soundcard's input.

This is a good technique to use for heavy cymbal bashers.

If youve got a tasteful dynamic player you may not need it.

That's a neat trick Finster. Do you record the trigger and gate after the fact or just run it through the gate during tracking?

The trigger is solely for opening the gate, it dosent get recorded.
