MXL 603 vs. 603s Mogami (again)

I have searched the Forum and found no statement that different versions of the 603 are likely to sound any more different than an unmatched pair of the same version. However, I just bought a "603s Mogami" on eBay, but received a plain "603" which, besides the minor cosmetic differences, has a different grill (coarser mesh and narrower retaining ring) than the 603s Mogami that I already had, and somewhat different slots in the body. Might these differences be enough to account for the difference I hear in the sound of the two mics, esp. the variation in off-axis behavior? I am wondering whether to push the seller to exchange the 603 for what I actually bid for -- if another 603s Mogami is likely to sound just as different (i.e. due to other random manufacturing differences), I won't bother.

i bought the 603 mogami's and i asked the same question a while back. there isnt a difference except that the mogami's have mogami wires in them. they sound the same so dont stress one over the other.

I gather it's luck of the draw on similarity in the sound of these, regardless of which "edition" of these you get, unless someone (with better ears than I have) has selectively matched them. Placement around the source (at the moment, a Dobro) makes so much difference, anyway, that I guess I won't sweat it.

Was this the auction you won?

If so, I was the other guy who won it (he was selling two). I also got the 603 instead of the 603S as advertised. Like you, I bought it already having owned a 603S. I've written a complaint and request for an exchange. If I get the burden of shipping charges, I probably won't return it.

Yep, same one. I sent them a message, and they were nice about responding, saying that Marshall told them that there is no difference between versions, but they will refund my money if I'm not satisfied. I decided to live with it

Same here, I've decided to just keep it. Now I need a good preamp to start recording classical guitar.

Those are some good mics.
I keep going back to them time and time again. Very nice.

there's so little actual wiring in those mics, it doesn't make a difference. the "mogami" thing is just marketing.

the difference in sound you hear is probably due to the mics being made at different points in time. cheap chinese mics are much more variable than just about any other mic.

that being said, i own both a 603 and a 603s. i use them as a pair and spend my time worrying about more important things.
