i've seen plenty of these rubber type pads that are attached to drum kits to silence them for practice,

do they actually silence the kit completely though?

Is there one brand that's better than the others or are they all the same?

can someone explain the mecanics of how they attach to the drums, eg the kick etc?

cheers

They still give a bit of a thud, but definitely muted.

If you're looking for more of a longer-term solution, you could always go with mesh heads all the way around. Not sure what your situation is, but the mesh heads will mute/muffle more than the rubber "sound offs" or whatever brand it is you're looking at.

the mesh heads are not practicle for me, i need something that can be whipped on & off quickly & easily.

you just put them on the drums, I remember them working alright, I just had a cheap pair I got from MARS back in the day (yup...go ahead...stroll down memory lane). They're still gonna be loud enough that if you live in a second floor apartment, you might get yelled at, but if you're in your parents basement and they told you the drums were "too loud", this is the proper solution. However, playing on them is not exactly a pleasant experience, and you can't really practice things like syncopation.

Like was already said, they decrease volume substantially, but don't make the drums silent. Most of them just sit on the top head. The kick one I have came with a little velcro patch that you attach to the head and then stick the mute on. They make cymbal ones also, which just just go over the stand post and lay on the cymbal top. I like them for playing at night.

velcro, i can deal with that, just wasn't sure how the bd would be muted, i guess the hihat will have a pad between the hats and on on the top hat?

Do you want mine?

I have a set that I wil sell to you. Let me know if you want them.

My old one had a foam circle that you put over the kick beater. It worked pretty well. Also my high hats only had one you put on top, I think.

I'll try to get pics for you in the morning. I use a complete set for practicing. The bass drum pad is held in place with industrial looking rubber bands, small rubber blocks and small plastic S hooks that hang onto the lugs. No Velcro for me.

You may as well just play on a practice pad. Neoprene just doesn't react like a drum head does, and you'll quickly lose interest because the sound sucks so bad.
