I'm very sorry if this has already been asked, but I did a search and of course found hundreds of "mic" related posts, so at the risk of re-asking an old question :

If you could only have x3 mics in your studio.... what x3 and what application for each ?

Well, you could record a decent song with just 3 57's.

I would probably go with a pair of sdc's and an ldc. Put the sdc's as OH's with the LDC in front of the kick for drums. Use the ldc for elec guit. SDC's for acoustic guit. LDC for bass. LDC for vox. Which mic's? Depends on the budget.

I just recorded a "scratch" drum track with just two OH's (KM184's) - placed about 8-10 feet above the kit in a spaced pair. Upon playback, the entire band (including me) was quite suprised at how well it recorded the ENTIRE kit! :D

Of the mics I have, I could survive with the Beyer M88, Shure KSM44, and Shure KSM141. But I'd be a lot happier if you let me have the other KSM141 and a Beyer M201 :)

I'd get two Soundelux U195s (did you mean under $1200 total, or $1200 a piece?) and an SM7. For drums do a mono U195 overhead, U195 on front of kick (in fat mode), and SM7 on snare. For guitar amps, use the SM7 (except maybe on clean leads where it may make sense to use the U195). For vocals you can use either, depending on the singer and style of music. Use the U195s on acoustic instruments, strings, and woodwinds. Use the SM7 on brass.

I guess I didn't define enough variables.

Lets say..... $1200 total.

(This is kind of like, your stuck on an island, and have to grab x3 mics you know you could surive with quite effectively).

What is a SDC or LDC ?

small diaphragm condenser; large diaphragm condenser.

Of course your desert island would need to have a source of phantom power.

I'd go with a pair of KM184's and a NTK. (of course, they are what I own and are used too - paid ~$1200 total for all 3)

That's 4!!!!! :D

If you get four, I'd add a sm7 and be able to record just about anything.

And does the desert island have proper room treatment? Decent monitoring? ;)

You don't need bass traps outdoors. And once you kill and eat all the indigenous monkeys, you shouldn't need soundproofing either

A great choice:

Audio-Technica AT4047 (think vocals, think acoustic instruments, think amps, streets at $499)
Avenson STO-2 pair (think acoustic instruments, think drum overheads, streets at $499)
Audio-Technica ATM25 (low freq... think kick and bass cabs, streets at $139)

Wow, desert island huh? I was tracking towards me and Catherine Zeta Jones but hey if you want to spend time alone on that island with a microphone, here would be my picks...

AT4050 for Voices and strings
AKG D112 for low end duty
SM57 for everything else

I would do a single pass on the log drum using the AKG, coconuts would get the 57 and the 4050 for vocals. You made no mention of instruments on the island so I assumed these would be about the only thing to record. :D

On the other hand

If you left at least one monkey alive, then you wouldn't have to bring in an outside drummer. ;)

Hey I never said Desert Island.

I meant an island with instruments, phantom power, an actual studio, but for some reason, no mics at all.

(Possibly a monkee or 2, but not Michael Nesmith, because he doesn't get along with other monkees)
