I'm currently obsessed with music documentaries. Not so much live performances; more "behind the scenes" type stuff - anything that gives insight into the creative process (both songwriting or performing) or just generally band dynamics and relations. Some of the "Classic Album" series are good, but my two current faves are "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco" and "Dig!" (about the dysfunctional relationship between the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre). Anybody else have any favorites?

Some Kind of Monster, the classic Don't Look Back, but it's more towards performance, than behind the scenes, but you get both. I think there was something like the making of Pump? I hardly remember it so I guess it wasn't great, I'll look around, I might still have it.

anything I can get my hands on that shows any studio or ctrl room stuff is always interesting. There's that wacky Rolling Stones thing that goes from them in the studio with baffles to some totally off the wall performance clips in a junk yard really, really annoying.

There was something called Bio Rocks on the Biography channel and it was documentary about the early days when there were songwriters for the pop rock hits. Kirshner and King and I can't find any info on it at all. I only caught the last 1/2, it's buggin me, cause they have to have more of those somewhere....

that Wilco story is amazing

I just found this but I don't know exactly what is gong on w/ it, i guess it's just a listing of stuff that they're looking for.

Bbc Radio 2

Hi there,

BBC radio 2 is very good on documentaries, they are there nearly every weekday during evening time, but with the listenagain option you could listen anytime anywhere via internet.

Here is the webaddress of radio 2 then you just need to seach for whatever it is you like. You do not have to restrict yourself to the current programmes they have a large data on a lot of older programmes too, so just see if there is anything which holds your fancy.

i've got "dig" on my netflix queue, but i'm not familiar with the music of either of those bands. good suggestions so far. here are a few more...

"miles electric: a different kind of blue" - focuses on miles davis' electric period and features his full set from the 1970 isle of wight festival, plus interviews with a bunch of his sidemen...and some cool footage of chick corea and herbie hancock playing rhodes electric piano .

"year of the horse" - neil young and crazy horse. lots of live footage, but also gets into a good bit of behind the scenes stuff/band inter-relations, etc.

"we jam econo" - a new documantary about the minutemen.

Standing In The Shadows Of Motown is very good. Festival Express is very interesting.

I recently saw a program on cable entitled "Rage: Twenty Years of Punk Rock West Coast Syle."

And if you can still find it, there's Athens Georgia Inside Out. Great stuff about some now obscure early 80's bands plus the usual REM/B-52's footage. Man there is nothing like seeing Pylon play or the Flat Duo Jets rockin some cheesey frat house!
COOL, dwillis45! I love Pylon and have a few of their albums on vinyl.

And Flat Duo Jets were pretty cool, too. "Pink gardenia."

EDIT: Netflix has it! Woohoo, can't wait to see it!

Hey, speaking of Athens, did I ever tell you that I play on a Vic Chesnutt CD?

I had Inside Out on VHS sometime during the mid eighties and I just plain wore it out! Lot's of cool stuff including a great acoustic rendition of Swan Swan H by REM. Plus all the Howard Finster you ever wanted and some nice discussion about Barbeque!
