Recently I have upgraded from DX8 to DX9, I've added XP SP 1 as well as upgraded to a recent version of ATI Graphics Drivers. In addition to installing games, etc.

Now, Music Creator won't start. Nothing happens. I can watch task list and see CWMC appear, then go away. It ran great for months prior.

Obviously something I have done has caused this to happen. I can't find anything useful on CW site. I will send an email to CW support to see if they have any clues.

HOWEVER maybe someone in this formum may have some insight?

- Will CWMC2002 work with DX9?

- Will it run in XP SP1?

- Any other insights?

Thanks very much for the time and help!

Hey, man. Welcome to our little community. Lots of people are too quick to jump on these DirectX updates. I have a buddy who had to format his system because he did exactly what you did. He couldn't get Sonar to run on XP after he installed DX9. If it was running well before, you might want to check out what is involved in the DX9 update and determine if it's anything you can live without. Talking to Cakewalk tech is a good way to start. The bad thing with DirectX is that in most cases, it cannot be uninstalled. I don't know if that's true with the latest adaptation, but you might want to look into that as well. Keep us posted, as I'm sure this is going to come up again.

There's nothing wrong with ServicePacks updates (mostly), but you might have a problem with DirectX 9, as GuitarEd stated.

For one or another reason, it seems that DirectX 9 is not "backwards compatible". I don't know if it's Cakewalks of Microsofts fault...

Thanks for the feedbacks. I have emailed cakewalk. I'm surprised I haven't found some info about this...haven't sailed the 7 seas with it yet but I'll keep looking...

Odd and not right that a DX 9 upgrade would hose existing stuff. But what do I know. There are some DX9 uninstallers (http://www.3dcenter.org/downloads/directx-dx9uninstaller.php) but I'll wait until I hear from CW before I start another goat rodeo.

Interesting world you have here. I'm just getting into it....for my son....guitarist/piano guy. We want to get going with some entry level recording stuff. Fostex MR8 type stuff etc. Looks exciting.

And we wants to get back to his MIDI world too...he's looking forward to recording instruments, combining MIDI etc etc.

I'll reply back if I hear anything useful from CW.

Thanks again

Optimistic, I had the same EXACT problem as you. I updated to Dx9, did my sp's, and updated my audio drivers. Low and behold Music Creator (2002) would not run. I simply uninstalled/reinstalled and it fixed the problem.

Been running fine since ever since. it's not optimal, but it works fine now. Don't know if you have tried it or not....good luck man.

Thanks for more replies. Actually the first thing I did was uninstall and reinstall....I didn't have any issues with it not installing. Although I did run the DX9 cheat installer thing from CW site. (Link in prior post). My problem is, CWMC2K won't start. I click icon or program name in programs folder and nothing happens.

Today I received a very prompt and informative reply from Cakewalk. I don't want to change ATI drivers. I am at optimal set for my AIW Radeon. At least I don't want to change the drivers....I'm more or less fairly kinda possibly sure that CWMC has worked on these drivers.

Here's the note from the nice guy at CW:

Cakewalk should work fine in that system. Try this:

1. If you have an ATI All-In-Wonder card, then disable the audio portion of it. Its new drivers do not work with Cakewalk.

2. Please uninstall all non-Cakewalk audio plug-ins, or at least any Steinberg/Prosoniq ones. You'll see these plug-ins listed under Control Panel | Add/Remove Software and select the Plug-ins. Uninstall the FX plug-ins in this window, then restart Windows.

3. If that doesn't work, I suggest that you disable the "Voxware Audio Tookit" audio compression module. You'll find this under Control Panel
| Multimedia | Devices tab. Click the plus-sign next to Audio
Compression CODECS. Select the Voxware Audio Tookit and click Properties. Select Do Not Use in this screen and click OK. Restart Windows.

4. Locate and rename a file called AVICAP32.DLL to AVICAP32.OLD, then restart Windows.

5. If the problem contiues, then download and install the latest drivers from your soundcard manufacturer's website, or if you have the latest drivers, reinstall the ones that you have. Then, delete the files AUD.INI and TTSSEQ.INI located in your Cakewalk folder on your hard drive.

6. If it still crashes, then disable all of the audio and MIDI devices on your system one by one to see which is causing this problem.

Amazing. I should have waited until sending the last prior post.

Disabling the ATI Rage Theater Audio fixed the problem!

At least CWMC2K starts and plays some tunes.

Everything else seems to work so far, too.
