Ok guys, hope all the festivities went well and all the very best for the New Year.

But did anyone get one of these: http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/englishie_index.html

If so what do you think, bang per buck it looks pretty good to me.
I get the feeling that Zoom may come out with a slightly more up market version of this soon to rival the aw4416 and vs2480 if that’s the case it may be worth waiting for that.

Alan.

I guess you are referring to the MRS-1266. No, I haven't got one, buyt yes, they are supposed to be good bang for the buck, and no, Zoom does budget stuff and will hardly try to rival the aw4416. They aren't aiming at that market at all.
(Which is not to say that they aren't coming out with a new model, they migh, I wouldn't know).

Ooops, almost forgot my point:

Personally, I wouldn't buy any DAW without trying out a couple firrst, too see that they aren't a pain to work with. That's almost the most important part... :)

If you're talking about the MRS 1266CD, I ordered one today with my Xmas bonus money. I currently have the MRS 4, and like it a lot, so I have high expectations for the 1266CD.

Should have it by early next week.

Let me know what you think will ya?

I've downloaded the manual and I've gotta say I like the look of it.
My thoughts are to try and spend more time "doing" than talking about recording and I think this could just be the ticket.

I spend way to much time doing computer stuff rather than music stuff.

Looking at it as I am from a one guy in a spare room point of view it seems to have most angles covered.

I expect delivery of the 1266CD today. It will probably take a few days before I can render an opinion.

In the meantime, you might want to bump this thread occasionally to keep it near the top. My memory isn't what it used to be. Getting old sucks.

One caveat: I'm a rank amateur. I'm not very talented musically. Recording for me is a hobby that gives me great pleasure. So take anything I say with a grain of salt. :)

Ok, spill the beans are we happy?
What do you think? Is it working out?
Did you get the extra USB card?

Your thoughts

I am VERY happy with the Zoom MRS 1266CD. Since I already have the MRS-4, I was able to start tracking immediately, without going through the manual.

It may take me months to figure out all the things I can do with this thing, and damn, will I have fun learning.

One of the really cool features is you can read a CD track into the Zoom onto a stereo track (I use 9/10) then learn how to play a song.

The effects are excellent, especially the reverb, and it has some really good mastering effects.

I did not get the USB interface yet, don't think I'll need it. I just backup onto a CDRW. At some point, I may want to bring stuff I record into n-Track, which will require the USB interface. Unfortunately, you can't save tracks as .wav files onto the CDRW.

I certainly have no hesitation recommending this machine.

Glad to hear it buddy,

As mentioned beore, as much as I love my PC, I would like to spend less time in that arena and more getting stuff down. Which is what appealed to me about this unit.

I read somewhere in the manual that one of the effects (one of many) is a piezo electro acoustic effect. From what I remember with most acoustic effects they are either garbage or great, with no real gray area. Have you had chance to try it out yet? Ooops I'm assuming you play guitar?

Anyway feel free to bounce any new findings and moments of unbrideled bliss in my general direction. matrixis@emirates.net.ae
As I am keen to hear unbiased opinion before making the plunge.

Future Music is doing a full test on this in their Jan edition, but that wont get to me for a least another ten days.

Some may disagree, but yes I do play guitar. I'm not sure which acoustic guitar effect you are referring to, as there are quite a number. In any event, I think that the quality of most effects is in the ear of the hearer anyway. The acoustic guitar effects I have tried so far sound fine for some songs, but don't work for others. Whatever seems to serve the song is what I try for.

MRS1266 CDRW Question

Just received my MRS-1266 yesterday. The down side is my music room is under construction (adding to the house) and wont be ready for a few months. Was trying to buy a closeout 1044 from audiolines. They were out of stock, so they made me an offer on the MRS-1266 I couldn't turn down.

I got it without the CD and plan on hooking it to my computer with the USB port. After reading the CDRW installation instructions in the manual, the CDRW looks like an ordinary PC CDRW. They are pretty cheap these days. Has anyone put a regular CDRW from say Best Buy in a 1044 or 1266? Anyone know the brand or read/write speed of the CDRW's from Zoom?

Thanks!

Somebody on Harmony Central posted about this recently. The poster says you can use an off-the-shelf CDRW, and listed a couple of models he knows will work.

You might want to do a search over on HC as I don't remember the details.

You might also want to check with Zoom to see if they can provide you with a list of approved CDRWs. No point in voiding your warranty.

In the search box type 1266 and you will find the post.

Or will the post find you?

Review/CDRW

Well Alan what did they say...

I'll gather some info on the CDRW expansion and put that in another thread. Did find it on HC.

Thanks.

Guys,

As soon as I can I will post it,

Just dont want to do a "they said yes or no" type post.

Adding a CDRW to the MRS1266

Just posted this on SOS - thought you new and potential 1266 owners would like to know...

Put a CDRW drive in mine today..works like a champ! I bought an inexpensive IDE 48x16x48 CDRW from Best Buy. Set the jumpers for slave. The 1266 comes with the mounting brackets and screws. Makes for a clean install. The cables are lying right there taped to the chassis. Just get rid of the tape and plug them in. Be careful sliding the drive and cables into chassis. The whole install takes about 15 minutes.

After the install I played an audio CD and did a full backup of all recorded projects. Just had the 2 projects that came with the machine. Wrote a total of 384MB to the CD. Took 12 min 40 sec. Pretty slow, but faster than re-recording everything. I figure it's writing at 4x. Was able to read the CD on my PC.

Paid $30 for the CDRW. A lot cheaper than $250 from the music stores.

Help with MRS 1266 !!

I have lots of questions:

1/ After using the smf import on the 1266, how does one get that midi data to save in the project. I can Import it and It will play along with my project until I save and shut down. When I reload the project it is gone. ? I must have to save it somehow as a rhythm song >>

2/ How do I go asbout changing the Bass Program and Kit once I have the midifile imported ??

3/ I record alot of midi, and have a midiplayer. I can plug this midiplayer into the MRS track inputs and record all on one track, but as you know I then have to mix all midi as ONE.
...I need to find a way to have my midi over about 4 tracks (and all in sync)...so I can mix each section separately...ANY Ideas ??

4/ Finally, has anybody got any good links to some Zoom 1266 help pages, forums, news, FAQ's etc. The manual is very vague in places and I feel there must be a site somewhere that can help users like me.
All I can find on the net regarding th 1266 is specs and units for sale...

Any help on the above much appreciated !!

Newbie

Hello everyone---Newbie here---

I am seriously contemplating getting a stand alone digital recorder, and have been looking at the Zoom 1266....My friends keep telling me to go with a computer recording system, but I don't like being tied down to my computer, even though it is a laptop.....besides my computer isn't the fastest machine around, is only upgradeable to 256 ram, and the harddrive is only 8 gig....My question is, can I record to the 1266, save the data to cdr or go through my USB and send it to my computer, and edit this using software like Sonar or Pro Tools? I like the idea of a standalone unit, but might consider doing some editing/mastering/burning to CD via PC if I could....If the Zoom can't do this, is there a standalone that is comparable and can?

Thanks in advance....
