MoonMix Studios
Multitracker (24-Bit) Conversion & Drive Formatting

People,

Looking at two 24-Bit Multitrackers (for expanding my studio operation to include location recording)...the Tascam 2488 & the Korg D1600.

Of these two units, does anyone know the mfg./model# of the onboard ADCs...or, more importantly...how the conversion/recording quality compares between the two?

Second question is...the hard drives in both of these units, specifically the USB partitions used for file transfer (which is very important to my operation), are formatted to FAT-16.

My PC native DAW is SONAR; & my audio drive on that PC is formatted to NTFS.

Will I be able to: 1) export FAT-16 formatted .wav files to that NTFS formatted audio drive; & 2) then have them be accessed by the DAW from that drive to be played/edited?

Really need to know if this is possible prior to purchase.

Also...can the hard drive in the 2488 (or the Korg) be reformatted to NTFS (so I don't have to worry about drive format compatibility)?

Thanks very much,

mark4man

In short, no problem. If you are transfering over a USB line, the HD format should not be an issue. If you physically try to transfer harddrives, maybe then. If those machines use FAT16 as a format, my bet is that they are not capable of reading any other format.

Yo 4 man, not George:]

You can call Sweetwater and kind of scout out the answers from one of their sales/techie folks.

Ask for Brendan Murphy--cool dude and he has his own studio too.

At the same time, you can check out their prices and opinions on the two SIABs you are considering.

Green Hornet :D

xstatic & Green Hornet...

Thanks very much. Good input (& good advice.)

The only thing I didn't like about the Tascam, is the short (45mm) faders (they look kind of stubby & awkward to use.) That's why...if I found the converters in the Korg to be superior, I would probably wind up going for that machine.

Thanks again,
