Multitrack recording

Is there any way to stop the track you are recording, playing at the same time?

I want to record a track while hearing the previous track I recorded through my headphones.
At the moment I hear my previously recorded track AND what I'm playing in my headphones.

Is there any way round this?? This makes guitar overdubbing really hard.
 
this sounds like a mixer problem... could you describe your entire set up?

How about muting the track you're recording? You'll hear the previously-recorded track, but not the one you're laying down. Is that what you're looking for?
 
I've tried muting it but it doesn't seem to do anything which is really weird.

I have just found a way round it, I set the track I'm recoring to play through my old soundcard (which isn't conected to anything) and then set it back to my new card when I'm done recording the track There must be a better way though.
 
Muting a track keeps it in the session, but you don't hear it play back. Which seems to be what zebadee wants to do. And he's right, it's weird it's not working for him. I think I'll try it myself - maybe it can't be done. :D
 
My setup:

sm57 --> midiman audiobuddy mic pre --> terratec EWX 24/96 sound card

I just want to stop the playback of what I'm recording (not any of the other tracks) so I don't hear what I'm playing in my headphones. It makes keeping in time when doubling the same guitar part much easier.
 
okok..this is funny.. cuz of the other soundcard dealio... but why dont we try this?

tell me if Im wrong... but Im gonna assume two things:

A) youre running your audiobuddy in thru the ANALOG inputs, not the SPID/F

b) Yyou're monitoring straigt off the card's outputs?? headphones hooked to the analog outs?

IF THIS IS TRUE... and probly even if its not.. then your problem is this, probly.:

there is a "mixer" component to your soundcard... it's either hard or soft.. I dont know which. If its soft.. then there is a little application that runs along with it... if its hard.. there are some little jumpers or knobs on your card....

IN EITHER CASE... (consult your manual to find which it is)... the "mixer" utility has a setting that says 'monitor inpu 1 thru output 1' or something to that effect. YOU MUST DISABLE THIS.

That is your most probable solution.

Another solutiuon... if you are strapped for time, or cant deal with the above for any reason....is to run your guitar in on INPUT 2.. and monitor OUTPUT 1. That should avoid any trouble.
