I just recently bought a Omnistudio USB sound card for my laptop. I have only had it a few days so I am on a pretty steep learning curve. I bought it mainly to do some minor home recording and to take with me to record live gigs.

I figured since it is a 4 track recorder, I could run 2 mics in for live ambience (L/R using the XLR's in front) and 1 input off the board for direct sound (The back has 4 stereo ins). Reading the manual basically tells me I should be able to record multitracks this way but I can't get it to work right.

I can't find any option in CEP that allows me to select more than just right/left/stereo options. I should be able to select 4 ins if I am correct (C1R, C1L, C2R, C2L). Any ideas. I have a gig tomorrow and want to record this way.

In Cool Edit Pro the inputs are paired: for 4-track recording select (in order, tracks 1-4) 1L, 1R, 2L and 2R. This corresponds to the bus convention on mixers. You shouldn't have to pan each channel input to the track's L or R: that's merely a way of labeling each side of an input pair.

Thats the thing.. I can't find where to select 1L 2L 1R 2R.. I was clicking on the In1 just bellow Out1 by each track I was trying to set up. Is there somewhere else to choose the option to go 4 ch?

Hmmm....sounds as though you don't have the input pairs selected in Options/Device Order/Wave In (if they are not, they won't show up in the window when you click on "In" at the left end of the track in Multitrack View). Make sure each pair is in the right-hand window (enabled devices) rather than the left (disabled devices). I found I had to make sure "Try As WDM" was unchecked for each pair as well to work with my sound card. Check that out. If you have problems, post specifically what you found and I'll see if I can help.

HEY MAN CHECK IT OUT....IN THE MULTI TRAK VIEW..........ULL C A LIL BUTTON DAT SAYS "REC1"ITS UNDER WHERE IT SAYS "OUT1" ....U KNOW IN THE SAME BOX WHERE THE "RED R" "YELLOW S" & DA "GREEN M" PUSH "REC1" AND ULL BE ABLE TO SELCTE WHERE U WANT 2 RECORD FROM....SUCH AS A "SOUND CARD"......IT GIVES U OPTION & PROPPERTIES THAT U CAN SELECT FROM........U SHOULD KNOW WAT 2 DO FROM THERE.......

What Chiko says - left click the 'Rec' button - it'll give you choices that are confusing at first. 'Left' doesn't mean panned left - it means it's its own channel. 'Right' is a different channel altogether - you'd use that one for the second track you record to. Of course, you can always choose 'stereo' if you like - takes up more disk space, though.

I can't say for sure, but some USB audio interfaces that support 4 inputs, such as the M-Audio Quattro, can only do so when using the ASIO drivers, when using the WDM or MME drivers I think the Quattro can only do 2x2 I/O, the Omnistudio USB might be the same, you should probably check your manual for details in this regard, as CEP/AA cannot use ASIO drivers.

Audio Protocols

Your OmniStudio USB is a 24-bit /96kHz capable device. This means you can record at any sampling rate your recording software supports, up to 96kHz at a bit width of 24-bits, and at 16- or 24-bits with a sampling rate of 48kHz or less. An ASIO control panel included with your driver software allows you to set the OmniStudio USB to its different operating modes. The OmniStudio USB has several operating modes, and when using the included ASIO drivers it will function as a 4-in, 4-out audio device. On the PC, the ASIO drivers, as well as the Windows WDM/MME drivers, will load automatically during the driver installation procedure.

I just took this right out of the Omni-Studio's manual, I have underlined the important part, it seems to me that you won't be able to use CEP/AA for the multitrack recording. Because this seems to be the case, you could use another program for audio capture, then import those wave files into CEP/AA for editing/mixing.

Here's a free ASIO capable multitrack recording program called Kristal Audio Engine..

Thanks guys for the help.. Let me try lpdeluxe's idea then if that doesn't work I'll try the program Strryder suggests.
