OK, maybe this is a stupid question to many of you but how do you manage all the AC plugs and wall warts that accumulate from adding gear? I've seen the Furman power conditioners advertised but they seem to address power surges. Are they also handy for connecting gear to organize all the plugs?

thanks,

rpe

There are various devices available to help manage wall warts. Some are even called Wall Wart removers.:p

Mostely these are power strips with specially arranged outlets or short extension cards.

Where can one attain such a beast?
Thanks,

I've seen these advertised somewhere, but can't remember where:

They are short; about 6" or 8" long grounded pigtails for wall warts. You plug in each of your wall warts into one these and then you can get them all plugged in to a regular strip.

It's great except for the pile of WW's on the floor next to your strip.

I've never tried them. I've only got one wall wart.

I've got a Furman conditioner and use it to power all my stuff. I probobaly have four wall warts connected to it. It's essentialy a rack mounted power strip with some filtering added.

I have four standard power strips powering all my stuff and I am only able to use about 2/3 of it because of the sizes of the WW. I hate them, but they are cheaper than having to build custom power supplies into all my gear. I thought USB might help because things should be powered off the USB port, but it won't handle all of what I need to power. Maybe someday.

I should have mentioned that the nice thing about the Furman is the way the outlets are oriented. Wall warts plug in at a 90 degree angle so that they don't cover up the adjacent outlets.

You can buy power strips that are laid out so that you can connect 3 or 4 wall warts and not cover up any of the other plugs.
pretty cool. I have 2 of them and they work great. No way in hell I'm forking out for those damn wall wart removers.

A couple things:

- For plugging wall warts into adjacent outlets without blocking, you can use (i) Dr. Ferd's Wall Wart Removers (those are the little pig-tail things referred to above), which are sold in places like Guitar Center, as well as online music stores or (ii) ordinary extension cords from the hardware store.

- Using a basic rackmount power strip has a couple benefits: it allows you to turn on stuff with a single switch (and make sure you've turned everything off) and provides some surge suppression and some minimal suppression of RFI (I think). Better units actually provide regulated power and better RF suppression, so far as I know. Some have meters! and lights!

- I think there are some products (rack mount or otherwise) that have a bunch of 9-volt (or 12-volt) lines coming out of them, which actually would replace multiple wall warts. I don't have one, though. If I did, I suspect it would probably have the wrong voltage, or provide DC when I want AC, or otherwise not work ....
