Multiple midi inputs possible for live performance?

My midi keyboard can be split so that part of the keyboard will output to midi channel 1 and part of the keyboard to midi channel 2. I want to set up Cubase SX to play one VST instrument from one part of my keyboard and another VST instrument to play on the other part of the keyboard (live performance). It appears that both VST instruments are playing with *any* midi input so I always hear both instruments no matter what part of the keyboard I'm playing on.

Can anyone help me understand what I need to do to make this work? Thanks!

What you need to do is set up the Input Transformer for each track. This will filter out notes based on the criteria you give, such as notes on given channels.

Select the first track and look at the inspector panel on the left. Make sure the topmost panel is open in the inspector (above the “track parameters” panel). In the upper right corner you should see a button that looks like a crooked arrow. That’s the Input Transformer. Open that up.

Once opened, set the mode to “Filter”. Now click the topmost “Add Line” button to add a new line to the top window. Now you need to edit that line you just added. In the filter target column, select “Channel”. In the Condition column select “Unequal”. In the parameter1 column enter a 1. This line now specifies that any note coming in that is not on channel 1 will be filtered out. So this track will only receive notes on channel 1.

Finally, make sure that in the Active Module section there is a checkmark next to 1 (assuming that Selected Module is also set to 1). Close the Input Transformer window.

Repeat the procedure for the other track that is to receive only on channel 2, except set the parameter1 column to 2.
