I've never used the CAD 179's before so I can't comment on them... but if your just looking for a pair of cheap multipattern LDC's for general purpose type recording... the Studio Projects B3's will work. But I recommend saving up for good mics... you know the old saying... buy cheap, buy twice.

Hiya...Never used the B-3's although I've heard them in use and they're on my list, but I do have a pair of 179's that I got cheep new and I think they're great...I've used them on vocals both positioned alittle away with rock vocals and positioned right up close (found a very nice proximity effect that sounds very ala Jeff Lynne)...Used them on accoustic (Epi EJ-200) great as a single mic didn't like them atall as XY....Used them on guitar cab for clean, very nicely detailed....Used them on overheads as sterio in cardioid/hypercardioid and mono in omni again, very nicely detailed....
More or less I've found it a very versitile mic that has a VERY nice sound to it for what I've used it for so far (only had them about a month)...Makes a great compliment to my Oktava 319's and GA 2200's (which I use for flavour or anything that needs that hyped high end boost, bitty 'bout the roll off button location though)
Hope this helps somewhat...DOM!
